Heyy i was driving to work one day and i went to go get coffee, and when i dropped to 2nd my rev gauge just reved out soo i pulled to the side it went into all gears but wouldnt move for anything, thought it was just the clutch, but then when my mechanic called me he said my diff. snapped straight in half now, i bought it from a new dealer about 4 months ago, with NO WARRANTY! its 2100 bucks to replace that and get a new clutch put in, how ca i prevent this form happening again?? and what do u think caused it?? all soo took it to track once, and ran a 16 flat hahaha any suggestions??

as far as your questions, i have no idea, but when I first read this I forgot I was on a mazda forum, I was thinking oh boy more jeep carnage, then I realized that I was in fact on the mazda boards... ahh well, thats what you get for owning the best of each world lol

Well, you could always get a Quaife lsd and get an upgraded clutch.. there's a list of people that have had the lsd break, so you're not the only one and it's not really a rare thing. Are you going to add mods and upgrade your engine internals eventually? Might be a good place to start if you've got the $2100 to use.. you can buy a stock lsd for $440 and get it welded for reinforcement. Then a clutch kit, $300 (can find someone on the for ale section that has one for sale occasionally) and that puts you up to approx $850.. find a place to install it and you might save some money unless you have some buddies that know how.

nooo see my mechanic, is already in progress of putting in a stock Diff. and OEM Clutch, and it ran me 2,100 bucks, i wanna know how too prevent it form happening again

you can get the stock lsd welded and many people seem to have success with it. search for the pics, they are on here somewhere.

alright cool, thanks mann, now i have another problem i forgot to ask, before that diff. problem i ahd an idle problem my MSP idles at about 800 to 900 RPM'S and sometimes it'll drop to 500 and about to shut my engine off, and when ide be in 2 and 3rd gear the car would buck, anyone kno what that could be??

Ahhh.. okay. Just really seemed expensive to me. If he is in the "progress" of putting in the LSD, I'd borrow it and get it welded, then let him put it back in. That just seems really expensive to me. Maybe I should major in auto technology instead of networking. Geez.

tell your mechanic to return the parts. Buy a aftermarket clutch and put in a welded lsd.

PS.. do some research on here.. you'll save yourself some money next time. Learn all you can about your car and you'll know about things before they happen and understand why your car does certain things..

protegegarage sells a welded lsd. its only 600 i think. buy that and a new clutch and be under 1000

yea man you really got ripped off by that mechanic...2100 for just that? i would though he was like replacing your whole tranny, lol. buy a welded lsd from protege gagrage next time and maybe a new clutch kit and find someone to install it all. you should really do the research on here whenever that kind of stuff happens to you. have the knowledge to make the right decisions. oh well. goodluck

out of pure curiosity, any of you ever tried a P5 tranny .. how does it go? does the LSD "really" make a diffrence that much?

LSD does make a world of difference. I owned and '02 ES Protege and an '03 MSP. The ES always broke tires loose in wet roads and cornering. It was the most annoying thing in the car. I couldn't give it any gas without a tire spinning. The LSD does make a difference. I remember going up a hill with the MSP Half the road was snow covered so I had one wheel in snow and one wheel on dry road. The car didn't slip one bit. Even though the LSD sucks it makes a big difference.

just asking around.. i heard a guy say that it didn,t change s***.. of crouse it depends on the application ... a driver who uses it as a commuter car and just drives fast will not have the same opinion as one who goes to the track every saturday night...

as for winter. i wont use mine much in winter..

i wonder what will/would happen if mine went... around here we dont have alot of good shops and i certainly wont do it myself.. im ok for normal wrenching but this is out of my league..

anyways.. util then it,s under wearranty till next year so.. :)

Well Im in the process of replacing mine as we speak. I want to know what else normailly tears up when they do go out? Is the clutch damaged? Fly wheel? And gears or shift forks? What are the odds of anything else breaking in there? Im going with the quafi and upgraded gear kit from prtegegarage.com I want to change the flywheel out while Im in there. I found a place in clarksville that said theyll do the work for 200 if I take the tranny out. Of I think thats a great deal. I know I dont want to do it in this heat.

My personal experience with the LSD breaking I had nothing else go out with it. Some other people have had different experiences. It all depends on what breaks and if metal pieces get into your transmission. I believe the only way to find out is opening the case up.
