cold turbo noise?

ok, so you know how if theres a hole in your exhaust somewhere, the car sounds like ass right, and you know the sound Im talking about? so I thought thats what I had going on, and was under my car looking for where the noise was coming from, expecting to replace an exhaust gasket...however the noise is coming from the turbo (or very nearby). now, this just started a couple days ago, and the noise is the worst at cold startup and pretty much disappears when the car warms up...

any ideas what the problem is?

thanks for any suggestions in advance

im not sure it's a problem to begin with...

mine does it too and it's even worst with a cold pipe installed..

it's a WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *shift* WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

as it warms up it goes away to the normal whisling in the back ground..

right?

I think I have the same noise... noticeable when the car is cold but goes away once it's warm. Definitely reminds me of a leaky exhaust sound. I haven't had a chance to get it checked out but I hope it's nothing serious. The sound itself is kind of a clicking noise, yeah?

yea, its definately not the "WEEEEEEE" turbo sound, but like a clicky leaky exhaust combo, and gets way worse when accelerating, until its warm.
I mean the works fine, winds up normally and drives normal, just sounds awful. I hope its not a sign of something serious either, just wondering if anyone has any ideas before I bring it to a shop so I dont get hosed not knowing what Im talking about..

not to scare you but it might even be a crack in your manifold..

i just get a WEEEE until it warms up.. the sound is only there when i take off fast.

Yes, I noticed my turbo making a "weee" sound until its warmed up. It only started doing that once I switched to synthetic though.

most likely is a exhaust leak by the S-pipe or J-pipe and the reason why it stop on warm up or hot exhaust its because metals expand once they get hot. and obviously when it expands stop the leak by itself so. if i were you guys i'll check all of the gaskets, and tight the screws up, it doesn't sound at all to be serious if it was serious will be all time at any condition... good luck..

you mean the WEEE sound is not "mazdapspeed" standard sound?

well is not a standard sound but it can be what i'm saying a leak near by the turbo. there is so much preasure in the turbina wheel that is there is a leak near by it will sound WEEEEE very anoying hard until metal expand and seal the leak, or you have shaft play in your turbo do to the miles on it. it could be various things but i think personally its a leak..

the car has 66 000 km ( 40 K miles) and always did that.

hmm gonna have to check it out..

but like another member said, his started doing it when he put synthetic oil in his car..

I don't think at all that you put better Oil it's going to **** up your turbo. i do think is you put a bad ass oil on it it may affect, but not to a point to start making noise. by the way you guys should have putten synthetic oil at the very begining though.

i put RP in mine.. i bough it 4000 miles ago..

it always mad that sound.. but now that i think of it.. it never made the sound in winter when i test drove it. it started with the oil change too :o

subbin' to see if you find the noise. I just made thread similar to this, but the sound is more of a shreak at cold crank.

it could be a manifold leak, crack, or leak in the s/j pipe coming off the mani. It probably stops once warm because it's real small so when the metal heats up from exhaust it seals up the leak. tighten everything up nice and snug. not necessarily a bad thing, unless it's a crack.

pull the heatshield off the mani and check for any studs that backed out. I had a missing one and that was the culprit.
