What Mods have you done or planned on CX-7?

OK, sorry to be an idiot, but I really don't know anything about cars, but the K&N filter sounds interesting, and I read that one of the best things you can to increase mileage is adding a high flow air filter.

So, can I just take my car someplace and buy one and have them put it in? If I need to buy it myself, what size do I need?

Thanks.

I don't recall the K&N part number, but it is the same model that fits the Mazdaspeed6 as well as normal Mazda 6 models and can be purchased at Autozone, Kragen, etc.

I also painted my callipers red, which look pretty nice on my white CX-7
Also replace pedals with Red NOKYA pedals. Thinking to put some MAZDASPEED decal at the back.
Waiting for good BlueTooth handfree / iPod kit.......

I'm thinking of getting a K&N filter also. Maybe also a turbo timer but not sure how well that will work with the keyless ignition. I'm sure someone could program it.

Done a shift knob and valve caps for now. Going to install my system in it starting with my 6 1/2 inch polks in the front this weekend. Want to do a Programmer(when they come out), boost controller, and a turbo timer. That will prolly be it on the CX-7.

I ordered up the following:

1. F/R splash guards
2. Rear bumper protector
3. Wheel locks
4. Touch-up paint

Future mods:
1. Rear hatch shade
2. All-season mats

Still looking for a K&N filter for the 7 and 8.

Zero Size the Wheels

Was going to plus zero the wheels with 255/55-18 Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenzas. They're about the same height, and about an inch wider. Mazda won't give me approval for them, though, and Firestone says they won't install something Mazda doesn't approve.

How much difference could that inch make? It doesn't look like it's cramped in there, and 1/2 inch on either side....

I'm looking at Firestone because they have a coupon on the Bridgestone Dueler, buy 3 get 1 free.

Here's the tirerack.com review of the alenza.

The offset is the issue, and I don't know beans about it. Though the wheelwell clearance is surely more than adequate, the crucial points have to do with how close the tire comes to suspension and steering components, especially when either steering, or suspension travel is at an extreme angle.

Can somebody who knows more about this post here?

I'd be somewhat worried about throwing more power through the 6 speed auto. It was designed for the 6's V-6 that is putting out 24 less hp and 58lb-ft less torque. I've also read that torque is already limited to keep the tranny safe. If anything, that will be the CX-7's weak link.

The offset of the wheel will be the same, your just adding a little wider rubber but usually a 1/2 extra on either side will easily clear. It might possibly have something to do with the DSC and ABS programing though and not necessarly how the tire fits suspension wise.

The tranny was designed to go with the new 3.5L V6 that is going in the CX-9 and 2008 Mazda 6. Which will have 265 HP. Its my understanding that this tranny will handle much more power, I wouldn't be worried about adding 30 or 40 HP.

Well that's a relief. What I had been reading made it seem it was designed for the 3.0L currently in the 6. Nice to know it was for the 3.5L. Time to go find a MS6 turbo, stick on a FMIC, upgrade the BOV, find some way to flash the ECU......(naughty)

Well I just looked at the 3.5L specs and while we might be able to get away with adding a bit more hp, I'd worry about adding much more torque. The 3.5L is currently shooting for 240lb-ft, say they are being conservative and it's actually 260lb-ft that's only 2lb-ft more then we have.

The initial release of the 3.5L will be 265HP/250TQ. However there is a 3.8L version of this motor with 300HP coming a year later that will also use this tranny. The DISI set-up for the 3.5L is already designed which will be big power(not sure when we will see this).

I personally am quite comfortable adding the CP-E stuff to my CX-7 without worrying about the tranny. I had some more specific specs on this transmission about a year and half ago I'll see if I can find it.

That would be awesome if you could post those.

Ok, I did a little research. I couldn't find the specifi info I wanted, but here's a couple of tidbits to tide you over until I get some more anwsers.

3.5L V6:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duratec_35

New ford 6-speed auto:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_6F_transmission

This version of the 6-speed is ok'ed for 300HP/280TQ.

The model number for our tranny is AW6AX-EL, I having trouble finding out whether it is based on the Ford or the Aisin tranny. But I will get to the bottom of this :)

Ok, here's the scoop. The CX-7 has the Aisin tranny. The FWD version is AW6A-EL, the exact same tranny as the Mazda6. The AW6AX-EL is for the AWD version.

These are the Mazda part numbers. The Aisin part number is TF-80SC, which is the same tranny used in the Volvo XC-90, which has 311HP/325TQ.

Although I haven't been able to come up with an Aisin spec sheet yet, this tranny is apparently capable of supporting 450HP/420TQ with no problems at all.

Hope this puts your mind at ease. Mod should we start an new thread for tranny info?

I think it would be a good idea to have a thread for reference. When the sub forums show up we can put it under drivetrain.

G-Papi,

Your question about the offset, I did a little research when we got our car. I was thinkin of getting new rims, but what I found out was the higher the better, like around 45 and the bolt pattern is 5 x 4.5 inch circle.
Later,
Chris

Oh, and as for the mods, We have the touring package, but I loved the chrome door handles. So there's this guy on Ebay, that sells the chrome door handle covers that look great (bought some for our RX-8) These will really make your ride stand out. And the chrome door handles are the only way I can tell if a CX-7is a GT or just a T. We haven't recieved them yet because they are made in Hong Kong (1-3 week Delivery) But I E-Mailed the guy and he made sure they will fit. Plus the Price is Good too.
