The more recent edition of the manual says 5w 30. 5w 20 shouldn't hurt it but it's probably best to stick with what they recommend.
Personally I would stick to the recommended weight even when using synthetic. If you look at the properties of mobil 1 5w 30, you'll see that it's designed to work well in both extremes, hot or cold.
Since you're in Canada 5w30 in the winter will be fine. But in the summer you may want to consider 10w40 might be better depending on how hard of a driver you are. A lot of WRX and EVO guys run 10w40. Hell I usa it Royal Purple 10w40 on my Miata. It significantly reduce HLA (valve chatter) on the Miata.
