Cams have 2 sets of marks? I and E Cams have 4 MARKS Should I use the ones that line up and face each other and the E and I are at the top or what???? 1.6 NOT 2.0...........

The service manual for my 2000 Protege LX 1.6L says to line up the marks on each cam so that the left cam mark is at 3:00 and the right cam mark is at 9:00. Essentially both marks will be facing each other. Also the I of the left cam will face up and the E of the right cam will face up.

To double check you can look at the lobes on each cam for #1 cylinder and they should be facing out (left cam lobe facing 9:00 and right cam lobe facing 3:00)

Thanks did it right still not sure what the trouble is but now I know I did it right. Cams line up just like you said, I and E facing up marks line up at 3:00 and 9:00 then face each other when you rotate crank cam lobes point out. Crankshaft lines up on Detent at pointer, notch on pulley line up with TDC. Dam things have to be right? Need to look somewhere else for trouble. Thanks tradosaurs for your help and guidance!!!!!!

I had to go back in and check my timing yesterday and I found that my tensioner spring was backwards. Also I don't believe I had tensioned my timing belt correctly.

Now I would recommend resetting your computer.

I used a timing belt that i got off ebay and it was too tight... I had to go buy a genuine mazda belt and re-place the junk one...

Yeah I hear you. I splurged and bought a Gates timing belt. I bought a timing belt kit off of Amazon but the timing belt was a Flennor.

Some body please send me a picture of the timing marks in the 99 protege 1.6
