What did you pay for your CX-5?

I have an offer looking for feedback
2025 CX5 preferred blue
2k dealer doscount
2k rebate
About 2k extra on trade in - so effectively dealer discount is about 4K
30k otd

Can I do better?

Might be market dependent. But I got $2800 off for a dealer discount on a 2025 Select trim.

I would never consider any trade in as a dealer discount. To me working out the price your dealer is willing to pay for your trade is a totally transaction than buying a new car from their lot. I would have worked out the price of the new car first and then discuss the trade in. Also, to make sure you have an idea what you can possibly get for your trade, I would look up the value on a site such as KBB or get values from places such as CarMax.

Agreed. We usually sell our old cars at CarMax or such, but if I were to trade, I would totally make the deal on the OTD of the car first. Even if they then lowball you on the offer for your trade you can get a price from CarMax which I believe is good for seven days which gives you time to take it to other places also if you like.

What ever happened to selling your own car? Why buy retail and sell wholesale? In over 60 years of car ownership I have never traded a car in. What's the point of going to all that trouble negotiating for new if you then turn around and settle for whatever the wholesaler offers you? Especially if you do it as frequently as some here do!

Personally I’m scared of meeting a stranger and what their nefarious intentions are. It’s not like 60 years ago. I have sold cars and a boat some 20 years ago. Would not even consider it now.

Not sure about your area, but here in IL we only pay tax on the difference. Also, with places like Carvana, CarMax, KBB and others, there's really no point in going through the hassle of dealing with strangers. We sold our CX-5 to a KBB dealer for what we would have received from a stranger. We didn't trade it in this time, because it was Tesla. They lowball trades so it made more sense to sell it outright first.

So let me see if I've got this straight. Carvana, Carmax, KBB and others will give you the same amount as a "stranger" and then they're going to make their 20% profit selling it to ___________?

Yep! Because they get them with their "warranty". And it was only about 5% markup on our old CX-5.

Keep in mind that some people prefer not to deal with the hassles of tire kickers, serial test drivers, hard negotiators, waiting for credit applications to go through, scam artists, and so on. In the right circumstances, it may be worth missing out on a couple grand to avoid all of that and simply show up with your old car and drive away with your new one.

Just picked up a CPO 2025 Cx5 turbo signature with 3400 miles for $37,000 OTD in Maryland. The car is in excellent condition and leagues ahead of my 2012 CX9 grand touring ($36,500 otd in 2012). Already enjoyed traffic jam assist and MRCC on the drive back from the dealership. I don’t know if I can go back the the Cx9. lol.

Also, in some cases, the tax credits from trades are well worth it. Maybe less so in the lower price brackets of pre-owned Mazdas, but the higher the value, the more value in trading there is.

Couple that with your time and you have a decent argument to trade in with a dealer.

There is also a MASSIVE difference in tools and shop-ability for consumers to shop their trade values compared to the last 60 years. Consumers are empowered to get more money for their trades than ever today.

Dealerships are fairly tight with discounts since the Gen 3 has only been around for a month or two now. Most were offering up to $1000 off MSRP. It's "crunch time" (end of the month) so I reached out to 6 dealerships who had the model/color combo that I wanted and all but one were not really willing to work with me. The dealership that was willing to negotiate my way (all email instead of phone/text/in person) was awesome. I got them to go down another $1000. So $2750 off MSRP including incentive. The cool thing about this dealership is that it provides an additional 10YR/100K limited powertrain warranty with a $250 deductible for all new vehicle (and some used) vehicle purchases. They also gave me tickets for two to a fancy dining place. The Mazda free one year maintenance program is nice, too.

In case you're not aware, dealerships who provide these extended "warranties" have some pretty firm stipulations for coverage. Many of them require you to have all your maintenance done with them. And the window to get the maintenance items done is pretty restrictive where it's best to get the maintenance item done before you get too close to the time/mileage. And of course, reading the fine print on what is and is not covered.

No problem. I always have my vehicles maintained well ahead of schedule. I was told for this coverage that I can get work done anywhere as long as I have a receipt. I see it like this. If something considerable in the power train that is covered goes wrong, it's going to cost waaaay more than the $250 deductible. No powertrain warranty covers everything. That's where "limited" comes in. What I can say is, it's better than nothing.

Reminds me of that pet insurance I bought with my couch. Covers if your cat scratches your couch and damages it. Or as I found out, as long as it's only one piece of damage. And I don't mean they will only cover one piece of damage, but they will void any claim entirely if more than one area is damaged which voids the warranty entirely on other claims.

Never buy furniture insurance. lol
