weird engine / trans noise

Mazda5, 2006 touring
Hello,

Recently my 2006 Mazda5, (~120,000 mi) began making some weird engine noises. It came about gradually and then stay pretty much the same. It doesn't really sound different from the regular engine noise, it's just much louder. There is also a faint whirring noise. Sometimes during acceleration there will be a grinding noise too. This grinding mostly goes away after warming up the engine and only happens at low speeds. The whirring noise seems to get louder when cruising or letting my foot off the gas and coasting though it never actually gets loud. I took it to my mechanic. We did some tests with braking and pressing the gas to see if the engine moved around. It did tilt back somewhat significantly. I had this happen before as well with similar noises and we replaced the passenger side motor mounts. This might explain the rumbling, loud engine noises but maybe not the whirring. It sounds like it's coming from the transmission. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it though. I just had the transmission fluid flushed 2K miles ago with a filter change. It shifts fine and there are no other issues when driving, just the noise. I'm taking it to a local transmission shop tomorrow to get it looked at. Anyone else have similar issues?

Take a look at the lower engine mount, that may be at least partly responsible. Grinding noise, I'm not so sure about, that can't be good. As far as engine noises seeming louder than before get up under the car and see if the pre-formed foam heat shielding over the rear of the trans, exhaust manifold and catalytic converter has come loose. You will know immediately if it has because it will be laying on top of the exhaust.
