Turbo is shot....what to do...help!

I have an 03 Mazdaspeed Protege and I am told my turbo is shot. Started off making a really bad winning noise and now I have no boost, car also starts to over heat. I have looked for a new turbo all seem to be around a grand to buy. Anyone got any suggestions on a turbo, should I sell it as is or should I swap the engine out with a 2L? I live in Huntsville and am not getting much help up here from mechanics. The car is mint otherwise.

if it really is blown, look into replacing just the CHRA instead of an entire new turbo
