The wind beneath my wings???

:
2002 White MP5
Ok, I don't know about everyone else but i like the roof rack on our p5. The humming noise when going 40mph, gets me sometime. But I was thinking can I put a wind guard like a lot of bike rack sets come with, ussually says Yomaha or something on it. Will this control the noise and if so can it be put on the stock roof rack.

Take some measurements and go check out a local bike shop or outdoor store. They are bound to have a fairing that will mount to our stock racks

There's a TSB our on the roof rack noise. The dealer should fix it for free...

NOISE FROM ROOF RACK CROSS BARS

Applicable Models
Model Starting S/N Ending S/N
2002 PROTEGE 00000000 ZZZZZZZZ
2002 PROTEGE 00000000 ZZZZZZZZ

Some customers may experience a resonances and/or a whistle that is generated by the roof rack cross bars, these noises will vary according to vehicle speed and wind speeds.
Although the wind turbulence noise generated by the roof rack cross bars should be considered normal, Mazda realizes that some noises are an annoyance to some customers. Improvements were made to the front cross bar to reduce a resonance that occurs at approximately 35- 40 MPH by adding additional wind checks to the face of the cross bar. The lower edge of the bottom wind check that runs the length of the cross bar was trimmed to eliminate whistling.

Order improved cross bar through MNAO Parts Dept. Please confirm that the cross bar(s) are installed with the wind trips (sharp edges) pointed to the front of the vehicle.

Part Information: Cross Bar - BN6B-51-6A8

Instead of ordering a new cross bar move the bars all the way to the rear of the side rails. We used to see this alot in chrysler products...usually that will either reduce the noise or completely eliminate it.

Can't do that on the P5, they're fixed position crossbars (there are no side rails per say.)

You can move the rear one in the US

I have the rear bar all the way back on our '03 P5 and it has the updated "turbolators" on the front bar. Very little noise with the moon roof open.

But it may make more noise the farther south you go. Jim

Ooops

I forgot the rear is adjustable..... since mine was delivered with it in the "aft" most position. I stand corrected. :)

I've got the rubber "turbolator" on the front bar as well. It seems to help from what others are saying (those who don't have it.)

A moonroof wind deflector might work too - it helps streamline the airflow over the racks. I heard whistling at 60+ mph, put the wind deflector on and it was eliminated.

Or remove the racks. If you're not using them why lug around extra dead weight, unless you like the way they look.

Did this just a couple weeks ago.

Had my dealer order the part, but what came in was a brand new crossbar identical to the old one we took off.

No surprise that it's just as noisy as the old one was either.

Gonna call Mazda this week and see what's up.

Well, if you look at the original post by PuertoRicanMP5, he

liiiiiiikes them racks!

soooo get the wind deflector. Add more dead weight!

PuertoRicanMP5,
Sorry, man. Didn't think about owners w/o moonroofs. If badgering Mazda doesn't resolve this, you have 2 choices:

- blast your stereo while you drive
- take them racks off until Mazda does come through. When you take 'em off, be careful to not scratch your roof.
