The sound of "Knock-Ping"

Ok turbo experts out there, question for you on knock...

Lately, in 3rd gear or higher over 4 rpm I start to hear a slight crackling noise. Now, I have never heard knock or really even know what to listen for.

Does knock have a range of sound? Or is there a specific noise to listen for?

If this IS knock. What else can I do-aside from adjusting the FPR to run more rich?

I probably should have described the sound better... It sounds like a mix between my rice crispies sitting in milk, a quiet popcorn machine, and my cat eating dry catfood

Find someone with a P5 ECU, and trade until the problem is tracked down!

The cracking sound you heard is pinging. You should either richen up your fuel or lower the boost. If you ever heard this, let off the throttle immediately or you could cause damage after a while.

Methinks you should crank down the psi. What psi are you @ now?

I'm at 6 psi... I'm going to check my FP today, and richen it up a little... When I think about it, this past gas fillup I didn't use the octane booster that I usually do. I just added it, lets see if it stops the noise... Out here the highest we have is 91.

That 91 octane did it man.......that isn't enough for a 6 psi setup with the advanced timign of the MP3 but hey if you want I will trade you my 2000 ES ECU for your MP3 ECU

hmmm an ECU swap ehh?? I wonder if there's anyone on here with a P5 that would want to swap. As long as they don't plan on going Turbo-it will give them a few extra horse-as shown on the FM dyno comparrisons.

Like I said man I will trade you my ECU it shoudl work just fine same motor just a destroked version adn from what FM says about our ECU's it should work just fine.

hmmm well I am very interested then... I was under the impressionthat I should only swap with a 2001 P5 or Es. If you can find out for sure I'm totally down. That would solve many problems.

If you were at full throatle I don't see how it would be possible to get knock with the rajesus of fuel the ECU and FPR will dump in, At part throatle and higer boost, 4 - 8, I think everyone will knock until the fuel issues is fixed

Wrong !! Aready had this prob like 4 weeks ago guys!! Traded ecus' with Tom@Kartboy and it didn't work. It is pinging but if you want to trade ECUs you will loose power http://www.flyinmiata.com/protege/tech/dyno_runs/P5_ecu_comparison.pdf Keith @ FM told me to stay out of boost until he sends me this:

The modification for your ECU has been shipped out. The instructions that
came with it were put together pretty quickly and don't have the photos we'd
prefer. I'll send you an electronic copy once we have the chance to get them
put together. Certainly, don't hesitate to give us a call if you have any
questions about the install.

How long ago did the solution ship out? It is going to all the BEGI owners, right?

Ya no doubt... I spoke with Corky earlier this past week and he said Bill was onto something.

I'm guessing it's going to all 10 people who bought the kit. I was under the influence it was a feul pump and some sort of ecu piggyback.

Hmmmm.... Ok now is this "device" just for us MP3 guys with advanced timing? Or is this the "Feul Fix" that we've all been waiting on?

I understand that this will help us MP3 owners with the pinging but will we have enough feul/FP to safely run at 8?
