The Joe P. Hat-Trick!

:
2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
Bascially if Joe makes it, I try and own it for the MSP. Today I installed my MBC, my FCD, and a couple days ago my FPR (wow thats a lot of acronyms). For those who don't know:

MBC - Manual Boost Contoller
FCD - Fuel Cut Defender
FRP - Fuel Pressure Reducer

Anways, the car is smoother and runs like it should, I've got a clean 9-10psi with spikes at around 11psi, and the extra power was enough to scare the crap out of my brother. I say if you really want the car to act and perform the way it should, get all three, you won't be dissapointed...

FPR Kit was *VERY* easy. Matter of fact, I did it at 2:30am while parking in one of those hand sprayer car wash stalls. Police stopped by and asked what the hell I was doing.. :)

I just ordered the MBC today. Should have it early next week along with my 60mm gauge pod. I'll have to hook it all up and see if I can take some pics with OrangeMSP's camera if he's back in town.

how is the install on all three? Easy, difficult?

The hardest part was probably the FCD because it requires a tap into the ECU, not to bad though because I had a pin out of the ECU so I knew exactly what I was looking for, and also I had to tap into the ECU for my Air/Fuel Gauge so I had it all pulled out anways. Just make sure good fitting rubber hose is used for the MBC I think you'll have the best results if everything is tight and done right the first time.

Yes he sold it, and for the best explanation of the FCD I'm going to have to refer you to what Joe has on the website:

"Fuel Cut Defenser for the Mazdaspeed Protege - This unit will allow experienced tuners to run in excess of 10 psi without hitting the dreaded airflow-based "fuel cut". It has been tailored to help smooth out part throttle driving along with utilizing an adjustable boost pressure sensor/switch to only activate the "2nd stage" of the modification while under boost. Since it is user adjustable, you can set it to come in sooner or later if necessary!!! Please email tech@joepmbc.com if you have any questions concerning this product. While the product alone cannot harm your motor, it will allow you to run more boost than deemed "safe" for an otherwise stock car (if you choose to do so) which can and will lead to engine failure!!!"

So all three of them took the edge off the car? I have the MBC....how much is the FPR kit and the FCD kit? Will my car be smooth with all three of them on there?

Well the FPR kit is 25.00 shipped and if you don't have atleast that then you crazy, and FCD is 60.00 shipped and also well worth it. My car is a smooth as it should be, and fast as all get out.

Hey MazdaSpeed, you said that you have an A/F gauge. Was that a hard install, do you have it mounted on the a-piller? If so, what a-piller pod did you get? I would like to get a boost gauge and A/F, but I am trying to figure out how hard it will be to install them.

I got the 3 pod a pillar staight from autometer for the 2003 mazda protege/protege5, it's all the same for our cars. I'm going with the Boost Gauge, the Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge, and a Voltmeter just because I'm lazy and want somthing simple to fill the last spot.

The air/fuel gauge was a breeze if you don't mind tapping a wire from your ECU, I mean all I did was get power and groud to it, unbolt the ECU, tap the signal wire from the gauge to a single wire on the ECU, start the car and it works like a champ. I think it works better then what people say, I mean I notcied that when my car was ideling it was running straight lean, did some checking to find that I had a crimp in a vacume line running from my FCD to the ECU and it was causeing my car to run lean, without the gauge wouldn't have even known so I say it was a good investment.
