Stripping

Ok, I need some help. I have already done a search on the forum, but couldn't seem to find what I was looking for. I want to strip my car of the ugly side moldings, but have a few questions first.

1) I cannot find the 3M adhesive remover anywhere on this rock we call Hawaii. Is there another way to remove them without damaging the paint or clear coat that won't take 40 hours to complete?

2) How bad is my paint going to be underneath? My car will be 1 year old in February, and it is Vivid Yellow. The last thing I want is badly faded colors that I won't be able to wax out.

Anyone that has done this with a bright colored car please help me with some input. And anyone with the knowledge I lack, please help me out in how to remove the moldings without the adhesive remover. Thanks guys!

there maybe holes Im not sure but find out before atepting!!! The best way to remove the old adhesive is to use somthing called an astro wheel, it is avaliable where most body finishing suplies are sold. Just keep saying "Astro Wheel" and sombody will know what you are talking about. I think its made by a company called "pnumatic... somthing and it goes on a electric drill and works like a big eraser. Anyways you may also want to get a product called goo gone or goof off, I would recoment goo gone though. and the best way to remove the side molding is to get a thick monofiliment (aka fishing line) and use it inbetween the body and molding working back and forth slicing through the adhesive materials. good luck!

oh yea and you paint should not have faded that much as to not match.

Thanks for the info. I am sure there are no holes under the molding, they are just taped on. Guess its off to the friendly Wal-Mart for some Goo Gone and to a body shop for an Astro wheel. Thanks again

yeah .. to answer both of you .. the P5 has no holes nd Goo gone is awesome it works great ..also i would really reccomend using a hair dryer on the side moldings to reallyheat them up .. also the best and fastest way to remove them with out having to peel them ... and bend them is to get some really heavy duty fishing string and wrap it around borht of your hands and slide it up and down inbetween the body and molding and (obviously pull back when doing that) and it will give you a clean separation from teh car and the molding and using the hair dryer will also help soften up the adhesive on the body as well

Yes, I had been to that how-to. That's where I got confused on what to do since I can't find the 3M remover. But the fishing line trick looks like it will work. I'll give it a try this weekend.

well it should i used to use it all the time on my friends rides when the wanted there emblems removed also i have removed the moldings off of my Eclipse that i got ..
