HOpe i dont sound too stupid... but i have a question for any good mechanic out there... recently my car starter grinded my car.... i let it go the first time.. then it worked fine for a while... then it grinded again.. and as we speek it is getting fixed (starter that is) since i told them it was grinding my car. Anyways, do you really think that this just happening a few times will f**k up my starter? I am assuming no, but even mny dad said if the starter fails, get them to pay for it. I say this too, but i dont thini k that grinding it two time will curse it... i mean, if you grind your cluth a few times, that is no harm... unless of course it is every day.

Just thought i would ask for you opinions.

Most likely the starter solenoid is not pushing the starter gear out far enough the mesh properly with the flywheel. This is probably why you are experiencing the grinding noise. Grinding it two times really shouldn't hurt anything, but if you keep doing it over a long period of time, you could damage the flywheel gear teeth. The flywheel is a lot more difficult to change than the starter. So it is good you are having the starter replaced...It was probably bad since day one.

i assume you are thinking mine is a standard... its not, its auto.... so the grinding was actually coming from the starter.... well not really a grinding i guess... i used an inapropriate word.. more like... well just turn your key when the car is already running. thats what is was doing...overcranking

It doesn't matter if you have an auto or a manual transmission, they both have flywheels and will both grind if there is a problem with the starter. Basically, when you turn your key, the solenoid in the starter pushes a gear out and this gear meshes with the flywheel gear. The starter spins the flywheel causing the engine to start.

Grinding gears in a manual transmission is different from a starter grinding.

oh, okee dokee then. thanks. didnt know that.... i thought that You thought it was my clutch grinding... my bad. By the way, how much does a new starter go for in our cars? anyone have an idea? yah yah i know i can call and ask but just dont feel like it....
