Mazda Protege ES 2002
Alright so I just did an engine/tranny swap on my 01 mazda protege using my old engine from my 02 protege (both are 2.0l manuel). swap went smoothly turned the key started, went for a drive, no speedo. pop a p0500 code (speed sensor melfunction) pop the hood remove intake, take out VSS, go to the engine and tranny i just removed, pull its vss off, the two are diffrent! the engine and tranny i just removed has a rubber gear on the VSS, and after a longer look at the VSS i pulled off the tranny i just put in, its just a a hole filler, no prongs in the plug connection or anything..I do some reading. Proteges with abs dont use a VSS(like my 02 protege) but my 01 protege never had ABS. My question, wth do i do now?! Do i pull the trannys and swap the diff gear so i can use the VSS sensor, or do i do a rear wheel drum/disc conversion and give it abs, and an ecu swap. Or is there an easier way to do this (please tell me there is) i bought the 01 protege as a BUY/FIX/SELL. i was not expecting this issue at all.

well instead of waiting for a reply, i just finished pulling the tranny. now to put the other one in.

The protege's without ABS got their speed from the differential, so putting in a differential with that pink speed-gear-thing would work. That seems a lot easier than giving a car ABS eh?
