shifter issue..

I have 01 protege es. I have a problem w my shifter since ive bought the car 8 months ago. Okay so i have short shifter and i know its suppose to be sorta difficult ccompared to stock to shift but this is different. When i want to shift into a certain gear mostly 2nd gear, it hits a "wall" i have to depress the clutch again for it to go in. The shifter is loose in neutral, i replace the shifter bushing didnt fix it. Any ideas?
what are the symptoms of a bad: clutch, trans, master cylinder, slave cylinder etc..?

update:
sometimes itll grind when i put in reverse, i have to depress the clutch and the put back in.

idk exactly w you mean, umm i changed the bushing on the big rod, i think its just the shifter..
wheres the trans bushing
 
i have problem after shifting into reverse / or from reverse back to 1st, gear would grind when i release clutch for clutch engaging.

gotta reshift once to remove the grinding sound. (happens like once every 10-15 shifting maybe)

but its my first car, and manual car, so i thought its just because of me been a newtie?

callphy, what you describe is not exactly what I would consider abnormal. reverse is different than 1-5. It's a different kind of gear, and sometimes harder to get into. What might help, is to get an understanding of what stuff looks like in there, or what is mechanically happening when you shift gears in a manual transmission. When you shift into a gear, the gear "engages" using a dog clutch. A facsimile is shown below.

So if you shift into reverse and it doesn't go in, then put the stick back in "neutral", then release the pedal to re-spin the gear, push it in again, and then re-try to put it in reverse. If the pegs match up better, it will shift into gear no problem. First gear is much the same way--more so than the other gears. It spins so many times for each wheel rotation that it's hard to get the pegs to match up sometimes. To get it in gear you might have to "double-clutch". This is what I described above with reverse. Without shoving the stick into 1st, release pedal, then push the pedal back in and then try to put it in first. you just need to re-spin the gears sometimes to makes stuff mesh together properly.
