Well Fellow People:

I just called a local Advanced Auto to see if/how much it would cost to get a 33-2134 K&N Air Replacement Unit for the Speed.

Of course I just told them straight up it was a regular protege b/c they get all weird when I say it's a Speed...:wtf:

Anyway the guy said to me that he spoke w/ the in house mechanic guy/dood/assman and that gentlman said that it is not recommended to put these filters on the car due to the fact that the increased air and flow will confuse the mass air something or other (his words) and give you horrible gas mileage

Uh OK I said....

He then went on to say that it needs to be installed by a professional mechanic and the computer needs to be reset in order for proper installation..

My Response: "Ok, well all I have to do is pop out the old filter, put the new one in and disconnect the battery for 10 min to reset the ecu"

Dude was flabbergasted by my response and said, uh ......

I then went on to say that there have been others running around (a.k.a. kwiktsi w/ 264whp at 18 psi w/ stock air box & k&n) without problems, and that problem could be attributed to the overly rich mapping of the Speed (by then I told him it was turbo) caused by a bad ecu..

Dude was  hahahahah

I said, ok thanks anyway.. and he said he would try to look up the part for me (although I already gave it to him) and I said thanks but no thanks BYE.

WTF is going on here?

No kidding man,

the dude was at least courtious, but damn it I need some REAL help, not someone telling me a K&N Tested STOCK REPLACEMENT Filter will give me bad gas milage

I went into the one on Mount Vernon Ave. and had to speak Spanish to the guy working the counter.

Well at least you could get your point across...

English didn't work here, maybe I shoulda spoke some Espanglish :D

so is that the right p/n to replace the stock air box panel filter? Is is the same as a 2003 n/a protege?

So what you're saying is...someone at a chain auto parts store didn't know what he was talking about. NNNO! I refuse to believe it. They are the most highly trained minimum wage employees around. I'm shocked.

(rofl)

Nnononono, This was the "in house" mechanic expert! :D

My mistake...but that's even more shocking. I thought Advanced Auto required 10+ yrs experience on a race team as a master tech before hiring an "in house" mechanic.

you should of asked him if he was a mechanic, why he was working there at a PARTS STORE and not at a repair shop

The cone filter WILL give you a lower gas milage.. Or it does with my car anyway. Keep in mind that's with the cone filter, not the drop in.
