I'm bored at work and realize that most the questions on here come from me... But hey, I'm a geek for knowledge. I was wondering how high you guys rev when running hard. Do any of you dare to hit redline or beyond? Or do you stay safe around 6K er so?

you were probably looking for mp3 responses, or at least turbo responses, but when really get into runnin' my car, i have taken it up to 7000 on the stock tach!

Yep, I know for a fact i can tach well over 7K. I think the last time i ran hard i tached about 7300...never gone past that and it was unintentional when i did it then.

On hard driving I do at least 6K, and will (when squeezing every last mph out) go redline. I do observe redline for a reason, though, and would never intentionally pass it (except for in our B.S. first gear). And then so only at the track.

BTW, we have a limiter at 7500.

Fuel cut off is at 7500, hit it the other night in second unintentionaly.
felt bad for the car. So I bought it some octane boost and it forgave me.:D

octane boost = scooby snack for the car.
lol

this is very odd. My redline is 7100 rpm. Unless my rpm gauge is off. I will see what the link reads my rpm at.

On the Miata, the tach will often show up to 300 rpm high on a fast run to redline. Why, I have no idea. But the 7300 rpm fuel cut sometimes appears to hit at 7500. With a Link, you can see the actual RPM.

That said, the Protege motor is not a revvy one. Power and torque fall off very quickly above 6k on a stock motor. You can rev right to the fuel cut without damage, but there's no point.

Accually the FS-ZE motor redlines at 7100 or is it 7200 RPM? The US-Spec redline at 6500. As we all know, our Tach needles have been much farther!:D

A few month ago I installed a big tach with a shift light because on hard drive I hitted sometime the rev limiter..... and I don't like that!

Now my shift light is set to 6000 rpm.... better safe than sorry!!!

The fuel shut off for the North America Protege should be 7200 rpm, redline is at 6500. And Keith is right, after 6000 power goes down fast.

Last time I played around with the math I came out that shifting at about 6200 for every gear was the best spot. It puts you just over where power drops, but will keep you in the power band in the next gear.
