Hey kids, try this at home and see what engine damage you can cause.

1) Turn stereo up really loud so you cant hear your engine revving.
2) Find a steep hill to go down.
3) While going down said hill, put car in neutral (not sure if this will work on an Automatic).
4) The final ingredient - now set your cruise control.

With this recipe you too can join the ZOOM ZOOM BOOM club! Nope, I didnt blow my engine, but I went almost to fuel cut before I realized what was making all that noise (my engine at 7 grand). The car tries to maintain speed, but since you are in neutral, all it does is go to redline and beyond.

Im surprised that cruise control isnt smart enough to realize that the car is in neutral, with all the damn electronics they put in a car nowadays.

vvvfeeling pretty stupid

well #1 you shouldnt have your engine in neutral going down a hill, and #2 hitting the rev limiter isnt that bad. its there for a reason.

Hey gas is expensive nowadays. Gotta save every way i can. :)

Damn, that's crazy. How fast does it rev up? I might try it, just to duplicate.

Edit: It sounds tempting, but I don't think I'll try it :)

i know by watching my wideband, when in neutral it keeps a 14.7 afr. but when in gear and my foot is off the gas it goes to ERH (injectors are off) so i believe you would use more fuel in neutral, then when it is in gear and your foot is off the gas. At least this is true for a 5speed protege.

Your recipe would work even better if you go UP hill rather than down hill.

haha, I think you are right Girth. It would immediately try to speed up, and redline.

Its revs just like you are sitting in your driveway, in neutral, and stomp it. Dont worry, just push in the clutch and the cruise control goes off, and engine saved for another day. :)
