Purchased our 5 this week, never thought I'd own a van

My wife loves minivans. I have been a minivan hater for a long time based on experience with Chrysler and Ford products. I just couldn't get over a ginormous vehicle that got the same gas mileage as my Jeep. As a kid our neighbors owned a Mazda dealership and had a 4x4 MPV that I thought was cool though.

My family has owned several Mazdas with the most recent being an '04 Mazda3 that I sold to my sister in law because she loved it. Since the 3 we've had several vehicles, none of which would have worked for our new arrival. We have a baby boy due in two months and didn't want to struggle with kid loading since our child will be pretty big (I'm pretty tall).

Despite my dislike for minivans I have always liked the 5 because it looked sporty and is rated for better gas mileage than our 3 (our 3 had the 4 speed auto vs. the 5 speed auto in the 5). We drove a 5, I really liked the way it drove and the basic design so we ended up buying a used '08 from a friend's Mazda dealership. So far we've put about 200 miles on it, I've always been into modifiying vehicles so I've come up with some plans for the future but nothing too crazy.

Our 5 is an '08 Sport Silver AT on black cloth. It has tinted windows all around, rear spoiler, and side skirts.

My plan is to

A) install black leather interior, I was a spiller as a kid and cloth interior is just not going to hold up. (I've done this on several cars with great success, the leather is better quality than factory).

B) Install a leather steering wheel and shifter knob (I think the Mazda3 wheel bolts on but a Mazda6 wheel is a different spline count right?)

C) Modify the front seats to go back another 2" (like I said I'm pretty tall and my knee is right up next to the key in the ignition)

D) HIDs (Our 3 had factory HIDs and I really miss the extra lighting)

E) Install some MB Quart 6.5" separates in the front doors (I've had them in the box from a previous build)

F) Maybe a MS3 rear sway bar but I have to remember I have another car for the twisties

G) Possibly install tail lights from a Touring

H) Do something about the interior lighting. I had an Audi with footwell lighting and it really made it nice for finding dropped stuff.

Pics to come once I can get my wife to stop driving it for a second!

I do all my own maintenance.

When do you guys get the transmission fluid changed?

How many miles do you get to the tank?

Welcome and congratulations on the purchase! I agree with you, if the 5 didn't exist I would definitely not have ventured into minivan territory.

To answer a few things...

B) The Grand Touring and (likely) the Touring 5 have leather wrapped steering wheels.

D) Quite a few of us have HIDs either aftermarket or stock and agreed, the stock halogens just don't do much to light up the road!

F) I believe the 5 already has an RSB stock but you can definitely get stiffer ones. Strut tower bar and lowering springs would help as well.

I get oil changed at the factory 5k intervals and everything else according to factory intervals, and I can usually go about 600km or 375 miles until the low fuel light comes on in my 07, the 08 to 10 is even more efficient so expect up to 690km or 430 miles, just keep speeds below 65mph.

Thank you for the reply.

I would like to find a steering wheel directly from a Mazda5 but I don't think they show up for sale that often. I stitched my own steering wheel for another car including wrapping the spokes but it's much easier to just bolt on another wheel of course! The Mazda3 wheels come up for sale on occasion so I thought it might bolt on if the wiring and steering column are the same. IIRC the 3's buttons light up red instead of green though.

What shift knobs have you guys found that fit?

I've never installed aftermarket HIDs but I'm sure there are a bunch of threads on it here if it's a common deal. I probably wouldn't be ruined on halogens if I wouldn't have bought my 3 with the HIDs!

Welcome!

Sounds like you have the same car as me and my GF. And your future list sounds very similar to what im looking to do as well.

I just got the windows tinted the other day and bought somee HIDs for my GF for christmas.

Unfortunately, her car didnt come with the spoiler or skirts so now im forced to buy those because with out them it just looks goofy.

Im also interestd in the taillights as well. So if you find a good deal somewhere make sure you share the info.

I would love to make her 5 handle better but she would need a seat upgrade first, since the car will already yank you right out of the factory seats if you turn too hard. Maybe some mazdaspeed seats?

Also if you modify the seat to go back further that would make a great write up. Because me as a passenger I get kinda cramped in the front. I would prefer to sit in the middle seats, lol.

Well any way, welcome and good luck with your ride.

PS, where you located?

Welcome to the forum, Bluesideup. Sounds like you plan alot of labour-intensive mods.

I like the idea of redoing the cloth interior into leather. I have seen it done at the local Volks and Nissan dealers on a few used vehics.

I have an 07' GT (Canadian Grand Touring) with a 5speed manual. My average around-town mileage is about 500km/320miles for about 55 litres of fuel (15 gallons).

Best highway was about 700 km down to fumes in the tank. (I have a lead foot. Full throttle everywhere and 75mph on the highway.

That's cool you can get the Grand Touring with the manual trans up in Canada. My wife can't drive a stick shift and it wouldn't really work well in our traffic down here in Orange County, CA.

Our first tank of fuel netted 24mpg but I don't think the dealer had it filled all the way up and the tires were down to 30psi all around. I changed the pressure to 40psi so we'll see how that changes things along with a full tank.

I'll be sure to document the interior install and modifications. I have thought about finding at least some Mazda3 leather seats to install in place of the 5 seats up front. The 3 seats are a little longer in the cushion and more supportive for your back. Since my brother has my old car I'll take measurements next month and let you guys know if something like that will work.

Dphillips I'd better be careful about giving out my location. I think we have the same color 5 and I might come out to a parking lot to find my skirts and spoiler gone! I think the 5 looks better with both options so I definitely agree with you there.

Damn it.(lol2)

The Canadian GT is more in line with the US Touring model, but add leather and NAVI options among other things and it's almost a US Grand Touring model sans HIDs, Canadians don't get HIDs. :( But all that is available in 5 speed MT or AT. :)

The gate shifting AT on the Mazda 5 has no button it right? Would a MT shift knob not just screw right on?

Check the online parts salvage database for any Mazda 5 steering wheels lurking around, you never know. 06-10 is virtually unchanged I believe, but the 3 steering wheel should fit just fine. Your 08 already has white-blue electroluminescent gauges and green centre console, what's a red steering wheel in the mix. lol. Do the same for the LED tails, you'll save some green that way.

HID installations for the most part is easy, you do have to bypass factory DRL unless you're lucky enough to have it disabled already. Since you're in the states, you probably have the luxury of getting the dealer do it for you if you don't know how then the HID kit is just plug and play (DRL is mandated in Canada so we don't have the same luxury :( ).

DKaz- The AT just has the shift knob with no pattern on it. I have a Momo Super Anatomic on my Mirage and that would work but it doesn't thread on, it has set screws that tend to come loose. I don't care but the wife wouldn't be happy if the knob came off when I was out of town.

The DRLs are disabled on our 5 already so no problem there. I will check car-part.com for the steering wheel.

Hmmmm, and I thought the headlights on the 5 was one of the better of all the cars I've owned....

Oh yes they are much better than the lights on either one of my other two vehicles. I was just ruined by the light put out by the HIDs on our Mazda3 that we had. Even worse is that we have them on my ride at work so I see the awesomeness every day.

Hmmm it might have been the old bulbs then, low luminosity high life. My Corolla's stock halogens seemed 50% brighter.

Projectors are designed to provide better cutoff and even light distribution but overall it's lower light distribution so it seems.

Man, so what am I missing with these HIDs? I have the stock Touring projections low beams (or are the HID high beam only, (dunno)(dunno)(dunno) )
Anyway, the only other I had that the beams were this good was Honda - both the Accord and the old CRX - Hi beams were like daylight for the time.
