Post Battery Change Problems (2001 UK Premacy)

Hello chaps,

I wonder if anyone might be able to offer me a little advice, please. I have a 2001 Premacy, UK model (if that makes any difference), manual, 1800cc. I recently had to change the battery, and a few issues have apparently been caused by this change. (Presumably, the garage who did this did not keep the electronics powered up during the change...)

Firstly, I noticed that the stereo needed a code, which I do not have, but I have discovered the bizarre reset code sequence on this forum and I will try that soon.

Secondly, I noticed that the "TCS Off" and "TCS" lights are now on permanently, but I plan to try the steer full right then full left as suggested on the CX7 forums here.

Thirdly, the engine often stalls now when cold unless you open the throttle slightly when it is idling.

Fourthly, perhaps I am now just paranoid because of the other issues, but is the engine not quite performing as well?

My tentative conclusion is that it seems as though the ECU has "lost its memory". Does this sound right to anyone? Does anyone have any advice? I will try calling the garage who replaced the battery and the local Mazda dealership to ask their opinions, but they will not be open again for a couple of days.

Thanks in advance!

Do those things then get back to us, there are about 100 things that could have gone wrong, hard to diagnose over the internet.

Peace!(rei)

The solution for the first point did not succeed. My traction control system does not seem to work any more! (To be honest, I used to turn it off because it was naff, but that's not really the point! My wife prefers to leave it on.)

I need to do a bit more research for the radio code. The codes that I found require an "Auto M" button which is not on my stereo (a 2001 cassette player), and the closest match - AST - does not work in its place.

The car is still more prone to stalling when cold, and I'm pretty sure that this must be the automatic choke because of the way it behaves.

I think that my fourth point was just paranoia, although if my suspicious that the ECU has been reset are true, then I suppose it is possible that things could be running sub-optimally.

We don't have many 1st generation Premacy owners around the forums but with all those things happening at once after a battery change it sounds like the ECU may need a re-flash to the latest good revision.

I'm not sure how many Premacies were sold in the UK, but good thing it shares a lot of the internal goodies with the Mazda Familia/Protege, so a solution might not be that distant

I'd call Mazda to see what they are up to, they may have seen that before

Radio code: Turn-of-the-decade paranoia that someone would see value in an OEM cassette player when the aftermarket industry was putting out CD players with LCD graphics!
Anyway, had a similar issue with my 2nd hand Honda. Went to the dealer with my registration and the VIN and they printed out the code for me to keep. I suggest you go down to Mazda with proof of ownership and the Vehicle ID (Is it VIN over there, too?) and see what they can do.

Thanks for your replies, chaps. I will pop in to Mazda and see what they say, and let you know how it goes.

Problem solved! Whoever installed the battery forgot to reconnect the airflow meter :P I eventually got down to revisiting the garage and after a minute of looking under the hood the chap spotted a plug and said "ah, well, this thing isn't plugged in". The engine, which was ticking over, immediately responded. the TCS Off light went out and everything has been restored to normal!

Muppets. I probably wasted a load of petrol without that plugged in. Goodness knows how the engine worked at all. There must have been some sort of fail safe, but it must have been horrifically inefficient.

Thanks, yes. I was kicking myself for not having a mooch around under the hood myself! I even said to the guy "perhaps he forgot to reconnect something"!

Now I just need to get the stereo sorted. I know where I can go to get it fixed for a fee, but perhaps a bit more searching will yield a working button combination!
