Some of you may have seen my post whenI mentioned local shop had to drop PG for reliability reasons. I was able to verify this today and was talking to that shops owner.

Apparently they got 2 dozen amps and almost half of them had issues. One of the 4 channel amps was indeed in the owners car and only running a 4 ohm load when it litteraly started melting itself. He said half the board basicly liquified from catching fire. The wrost part, the amp never entered a protection mode nor pop a fuse.

He told me that PG has sent all poteduction of amplifiers over sees this year aswell as repair. The minimum repair time is 8-12 weeks.

Never had a problem with my phoenix gold so far. Seems like a solid product. Maybe just a bad batch? (bang)

Historicly they have been one of the best products out there. However this all went down with the Xenon amplifiers. I would bet this is a result of a bad design andvery poor quality control. They'll probably work it out over the next year or two, but until then I woulod not buy a new PG amplifier.

WOW! yikes, thanks for the headsup man, The last thing I need is more problems. Used to be that a name like PG you wnt to to avoid quality issues jsut liek this *sigh* is nothing sacred?

Definately striking the Xenon 100.4 from my list. Though I'd kind of ruled them out already form hearing other random rumors circulating the web... Looks sofar like I'll either be looking at a Soundstream VanGogh, or MB Quart Refrence. EItherway I should be pushing 4ohm stereo for a bi-amped formt stage of some sort, so I shouldnt' be taxing anything thatmuch.

Perhaps they're attempting to bitchslap the Protege community by having their demo car spontaneously combust...

I suspect The man's involvement with this one.. *hmmm*

Put the Rockford FOsgate Power series on your list. According to the same guy (who is the biggest Quart fan) the RF power amps are simply the best he has ever used. They are putting out twice what thye are rated at in some situation. Th edown side is that they are F'in HUGE!

That's a bummer to hear, thanks for the heads up 1sty- So it sounds like fosgate is back in the mix again with high end?

i looked through every birth sheet for the power amps at my buddy's shop, and every single one put out at least 50% more power according to the birth sheet. the T1001BD put out just over 1600 watts, the T5002 put out 164x2, which is amazing since it's rated 75x2.

i've been hearing more and more bad things about PG lately:( now i'm really glad i didn't pursue a sponsorship with them.

Seems to be although the power amps had some problems at CES, I haven't heard of any since then though.

I was thinking fosgate as well, but the size is the limiting factor in that. I'm looking to stay under-seat, the soundstream and Quart are some of the only ones that'll fit that I somewhat trust. I am looking for over 100wX4

Hey Poseur I just picked up last years Rockford Power 4 channel (851x) and it drops 110x4 at 4 ohms. It fits nicely under the seat, it's 17x10x2.5 i believe. It is working great so far and with the rear channels brigged, my sub is eatin it up. I'll be sure to let everyone know in the event of (flame2) or(blowup)

sucks that phoenix is having such problems. the zenon line was always a lower line of amps though right?

as far as rockford, the buzz ive heard is their trying to return the the good ole days. seems like the attitude has done a 180 and they want to get back to the top again like they used to be.

xenon is a new line for this year, that price-wise, etc has sorta fallen into t middlgeound of tantrum and ti, but it's been becoming more and more obvious that it's prettymuch a sellout move. Kind of unfortunate, I was kindof looking forward to getting ahold of one. They're just about everything I was looking for save for a little bit too long. THey've got regulated output similar to JL's amps, but still there's a good bit of reported variance. I believe Octane is the lower-line you're thinking of. Eitherway, cheap or expensive, an amp sold by a reputable brand still shouldn't catch fire....
