pc trouble?

ok my dad upgraded his pc, heres the parts he got..
MB ASUS P4S533-VM
Intel P4/2.4BGHz 533M
DDR 256MB|32X64 PC-2700
350 watts power supply

installed XP as the O/S. what happens is while loading paltalk a chatting program and AOL the computer reboots by itself. also closing the IE windows lags and sometimes freezes them. i'm leaning more towards an O/S problem then hardware problem. anyone have any suggestions or run into the same problem???

heres the whole process that i did last night, started off trying to install XP with an additional HD and Cdrom.. kept getting some I/O error during install. so put win2k on did a quick format and tried installing win2k got another I/O error. so i turned the machine off unplugged the additional cdrom and HD which are like 3 or 4 yrs old. so unplugged them and tried xp again. went through setup but didnt do a format installed normal. everything installed ok. the only thing i can think of is that some win2k files might have stayed on and are causing conflicts.... it was 3am and needed to be at work at 7am thats why everything was installed so sluppy, learned a lesson from that, TAKE YOUR TIME..

sounds like an issue with the aol/chat. uninstal/reinstall the software.

you should have done a full wipe and reload on your hd. the problem is your computer is set up for your old mb / processor and not the new ones its possible some information stayed and is causing small conflicts causing the lags. i see this at work alot when people try to do their own upgrades.
XP is a great os but is has to work totally by its self. Especially cus unlike 2000 and NT it really works off a different platform. My advice is to reformat and start with a clean slate. if you get the same problem if could even be a motherboard problem or a surface error on your hd.. did u scan the hd (full scan surface and all) before attempting to use it? u can pm me if u have any questions

hahahahaha mac hell NO!!!
but as i was looking it up at work, looks like pc-cillin is causing the problem. i'll find out when i get home.

any pc running windows is garbage in my opinion....too many damn problems if you ask me....im a computer science major so my computer is a necesity....i hate my windows xp......constant problems(freezing, rebooting, just plain gay $hit). I use unix sometimes but hate typing every damn thing.....windows is just user friendly.....i like the new mac jaguar o/s.....based on unix....now thats tight.....damn windows.....

also look for driver errors, i had some problem with my bro's comp lagging like hell and rebooting for no reason, turns out the video card driver was corrupt or some s***, intalled a new one and everything was fine.

Its strange how such seemingly unrelated things go to create a problem.

I've never had XP crash on me until i installed SP1, so i just took it off and all is good. Win98 on the other hand crashed 2 times a day...

still, for games, file sharing and $$$ and upgradability PC's get my vote.

pc is definetly the best for what you said....NO DOUBT!!!
just have to get used to the constant problems with windows(basically living with it now) I don't have many programs on my computer that i don't need...basic word processor, image editing, program writing crap, unix crap, no aol or chat or anything like that.....

You already know what I use.....Can you say PENGUIN POWER!!!(thumb)
