But wouldnt i have to get a wider tire for a wider rim.. stock rims are 7" wide and the tires were 215/45/R18 i believe... these rims are 8" and you suggested 235/40/R18.. i thought the "40" was the width of the tire.. unless im wrong.

You're wrong. 235 is the tire width (in mm), and the 40 represents the ratio of sidewall height to width (again, in mm). You'll want to go with a wider tire or you'll seriously risk chewing up the edges of your wheels.
