Oil filter question

It seems that after 6/09 Mazda switched the element filter for a cartridge type. Long story short I was forced to reuse the filter because I could not get a new one in time. Would it be possible to change the filter only without losing the oil I just put in? I know whatever is in the filter will go but this does not concern me. Thanks!

Its not uncommon to replace the filter only every 2nd oil change. Depending on the quality of the oil you used, and how long the filter did its work, you should have no problem waiting until the next change.

IDK why you wouldn't change the filter at every change, it's not like its expensive. not changing the filter is like taking a shower and putting your dirty underwear back on.

sorry guys...I don't think re-using an oil filter can be good nor does it save you that much money.
It is not like you are paying $1800 for an extended warranty.

I see many people on here say they do it, in this case it was an emergency that is understandable and I guess one time won't hurt but i don't think filters are made to last that long, they are only paper.

I agree on changing the filter every time, its just not worth keeping it around for any reason. I'm happy to know I can swap the old one out without losing all the new oil, so I'm doing that as soon as it stops raining. FWIW I did the oil change at 1000 mi. My car was a dealer leftover so its an '09 but only a month old :) I dont care what Mazda says, a new engine will have lots of filings in the oil that should be removed before 1000 mi. Besides, my car in particular led a rough early life, lots of cold starts moving around the lot, seasons changing, moisture from humidity and just general sitting around, so I think changing it early was the right move.

While I do not recommend anyone extending the life of the oil filter beyond factory guidelines, I used to change the oil much more often than Ford suggested for my Mustang (6 months or 12K km). I would not, however, change the filter more than once a year because I never drove more than 10k a year (my 22 year old mustang has 120K kilometers).

Oil changes took about 5 minutes without a filter change, so I did them whenever I saw oil on sale.
