Oil Cooler Leaking

Found out last week that my oil cooler is leaking at the seal and unfortunately, I have to replace the entire assembly at a parts price of $472.00 plus installation. I've read other places that I can convert the cartridge filter to a screw on filter, but does that negate the need to replace the oil cooler? I still have to replace that either way, right?

Consider yourself a lucky guy or today your lucky day. A few have had this complaint in the past and no one has found the gasket. I was browsing Amazon while on the red eye and came across this...

https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned)

Part# for future reference:
LF8X-14-702
$7.94 + $4.35 shipping sold by Avondale Mazda.

The conversion kit does not include this gasket or replace the cooler.

NOTE: The seal above is for the NEWER style cooler!

Looks like this one is for the new cooler, the one I need, not the old cooler that I have. I really hate having to spend that kind of cash to fix a simple problem.

I replaced mine with the newer OEM piece. The part was just under $400 but someone sells them on eBay cheaper. My seal blew out and it would have been dumping a quart every 10 miles.

This gasket Mz Part No. LF8X-14-702 (on Amazon)only works if your cooler is the newer metallic colored one. The "black" coolers, like mine, do not have an OEM part available, but Mazda will gladly sell you the upgraded cooler for $300+. Many sellers on Ebay have the old style gasket for sale, so someone reverse-engineered the poor design for us schmoe's that can't afford the new cooler! I guess that once I replace my "old style" gasket, I'll probably get another 75K miles out of it before it leaks again...Points deducted from Mazda Corp. for not offering an affordable solution.

It's called Dorman, and they've been offering OEM replacement parts for decades. Here is what those of us with the 'old' style cooler need.

Dorman Part # 917-105
Ford Part # LF02-14-700

Exactly. Dorman is a source of reliable parts, for sure! Looks like they improved the design somewhat- I will let the forum know how it holds up. Thanks for posting the info!

I have the exact same problem on a 2006 Mazda5. Was thinking of doing the RTV fix but would prefer the actual seal. Will any fit the 06?
