Now im a bit confused

After reading quite a few posts in this forum (as you can see, im a newb), i have noticed people are generally buying three basic intakes:

Injen
AEM
Off brand from ebay

If i intended to buy the AEM, would i notice the difference between that and the similar off brand one from ebay for about 100 less?

Also, i had liked the AEM because i could get it in that nice blue metallic color to match my car, so that brings up another question. Is that paint/laquer used for brake calipers/engine components worth it? and if it is or if you have used it and it works, could i just get the cheaper intake and paint the metal part blue with that laquer? these may be dumb questions im just curious though

First off.....Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. (stash)

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

as for the intakes.....its pretty much a wash as for the performance you will get out of any of them....they are all pretty equal.....the bottom line is what fits into your budget...and which one do you like the look of the best?

As for the caliper paint.....well all you REALLY need is good quality HIGH TEMP PAINT to do the job....not that high dollar stuff....the key is getting it all cleaned properly before you paint them.

as for painting your own intake.....all the caliper painting sets I have seen were BRUSH applied....and you wouldn't get a very good finish on your intake using a brush.....but if you wanted to use regular high temp SPRAY paint.....that would work just fine....in fact it wouldn't NEED to be high temp paint...and you could clear coat it afterwards......OR for a very durable finish...that the tubes and have them powder coated the color of your choice.
 
hmmm...thanks a lot, and could you direct me to the corner of the room near the fridge that has a link to the paint i could use to paint the brake calipers AND intake for cheap as you say :-)
 
I don't know about the Air intake--- I had spent $$$ on an AEM for my old Eclipse I had before I got wise and bought the P5.
It didn't seem to make any differance at all (except to the noise at full throttle).

I would also caution on the fit - alot of these intakes you can get from Ebay are very substandard, even with a name.....makes you wonder where they get them from.

Just don't spend a fortune - it might not be what you think it is.

can you use that intake? I guess you certainly can....but do NOT hold your breath on getting those double digit increases in HP or Torque....its NOT going to happen....

as for the caliper paint....if you REALLY want to spend $20 for a can of spray paint....go ahead...BUT...if you will just go to wal-mart or your nearest autoparts store and purchase high temp ENGINE paint....and then get some good parts/brake cleaner....clean the calipers really good, get some small brushes....spray the paint into some small can ....and BRUSH IT ON....and do multiple coats.
 
ok do i need to do the same process for the sway bar and intake, or just spray those directly? and i know the hp claim was BS lol...i should expect what, 1-3 hp?

for the intake and the strut bar you should lightly sand the surface of each.....that way the new paint will adhere better...and it certainly will not hurt it to wipe them down with a cleaner after the sanding is all done....it will remove the residual dust...and certainly any oily residue from anything.

yep....1-3 woud be about right.

shouldnt need to clean TOO much car only has 50 miles on it
 
I have read just about every thread on intakes (which must be roughly 20) and this has been the most informative. I was going to just buy one off of ebay. But know I will spend the money for AEM or Injen. Only one question. If they are all made of the same material then why is the one on ebay a piece of crap? or is it that the peices just won't fit right or poor build quality? Thanks for the help.

TYPICALLY where the big difference is....is in the quality of the parts that they use...and YES the fit....if the BENDS are not just right...you could end up with interfeerences, rubbing...that sort of thing. also...if the tubing is coated....the quality of the coating....either painted. or POWDER coated....things like that...

not to mention if you get them from a REAL STORE....and it doesn't fit properly....there is some piece of mind there to have some recourse....and getting a refund.
 
Also, cheaper brands use cheaper filters, which is where the entire entry point of your performance starts. Materials may slighty vary to provide a better retarter of heat build up from say Injen to AEM to and ebay version...but all in all materials should be relatively the same in performances as Sir Nuke stated. On my previous import rides...I just waited until an off brand CAI came out...not the SRI's....then bought a AEM or K&N filter and probably had the same product without the high marketing mark up prices.....but a CAI off brand hasn't come out yet????....HMMMM...wonder why..anyway, as with anything, is up to you and your $$$$$$.....Peace!
 
I bought one of those off-brand intakes off of ebay a few months ago. That OBX Racing one. It works fine, except for the piece of metal that they gave me to hold down the intake broke after about 2 weeks, and i had to go to Home Depot, and buy a new one.
 
i was looking at my current air filter arrangement today (for the first time really lol) and noticed the p5 already has a sort of forced induction thing going already...did you guys just get rid of that piece that goes to the grill or make some modification to connect it to the new filter - cause from the pics the filter is round, and the stock seems pretty square to me...but you know me, im not too good with mechanics and whatnot, i just want to eventually stomp all over a stang
