2003 Protege Mazdaspeed
At around 70 mph, my left front wheel well makes a very loud rubbing sound and increases with speed until around 80 mph. When I take the car out of gear or press in the clutch at those speeds, the obnoxious rubbing sound goes away!

Ive found some information on sway bar links failing and that is also what the dealer said the issue was but I was not going to have them replace it for $250.
I replaced the sway bar end links with moog OEM on both sides and while the car was on stands, the looseness of the endlinks compared to the stock had been fixed. HOWEVER, the noise still persists at the same speeds.

There must be another issue.

if the sound goes away when out of gear or clutch pressed in, my guess would be CV joint or axel related, or even gearbox related.

bearings would be noisey at any speed, and suspension sounds would not be related to gearbox activity.

Jack the car up, look at the sway bar link and if it's good look for the axle boots... Had similar issue but more of a clunking noise (not bad) , turned out my axle was bad. Gl

have you replaced your trans fluid and is your trans motor mount stock? I honestly don't know just giving some ideas. I know with aftermarket transmission mounts you can hear the transmission through the car but it doesn't sound like anything your describing.
