99 protege
Hey guys i from San Antonio,Texas new to the Mazda scene but not the import scene. I'm trying to preform a engine swap on a 99 protege 1.6l trying to put in the 2.3l. anyone preform this swap yet??

Welcome to the forums!

I havent heard of anyone swapping the mazda3 motor in, but a swap that has been done a few times is the KLZE(or klde) swap which is the v6 from the mazda 626 primarily. plenty of power and there are many active members that could help you with the swap. but if you are really up for the challenge, itd be great to see the mazdaspeed3 mzr disi swapped into a protege.

furthermore, if you have any questions, just PM me and ill do what i can to help.

enjoy the forums!

Good to see another member from San Antonio... you could really wake up your 1.6 with a little boost... The only kits arround for our cars are pretty weak, so you would neede to peice together a kit... But as far as engine swaps i dont think anyone has done the 2.3 swap... KL would be most cost effective and you have plenty of info on here... just use the search box and your qustions will be awnsered...

well a few things with the mazda3 just for physical/practical issues:
The mounts are not even close to the same design as the protege. The passenger side mount studs on the motor do look similar though, so that might be ok.
The transmission uses a cable linkage setup for the shifter rather then the bar design the protege uses.
The motor does not make a lot of power
The 5-spd manuals are still the crappy g-series, so that will be your weak point still, altho ur 99 has the even crappier f-series
The motor is only avail in obdII form which leaves a huge headache of wiring to get it to work right
Some have mentioned the ecu needing to see the mazda3 cluster and key to work as well, not confirmed right now though
Axles, since its a gseries trans Im sure the protege driver axle would work fine from a 2.0l protege, but if the intermediate shaft is shorter or longer then a different passenger axle would be needed.
No one has test fitted on in to see clearance on the crossmember or if the exhaust lines up once ran down under the car
The throttle bodies are electric and have no cable linkage.
The list goes on.....

Not to mention a used 2.3l non DISI goes for 1500-1700+shipping, a Used KLZE bolts right up and easier, makes more power and more torque and can handle a good amount of boost and go for 700-1200shipped

y not bpt it....bp are cheap, strong...and can make alot of power. thats the way im going in my BJ. i know someone who made 334 whp on a 100% stock bp with a t3/to4e...ok he had a se-r throttle body and standalone..still stock motor
