They will fit over the top of the rails just fine. They actually sit kind of to the sides.
I've tried it on my friend's 03.

I wouldn't fully throwout the idea of upright mounts, but I'd avoid the anklebiter as it has some compatibility issues,

I have 2 of these on my set-up and there are no issues at all. What issues are you refering to?

compatibility with some bikes, or cranksets rather. They used to work fine with my raceface cranks, but willnot work ont he new trend of oversized hollow crankarms. New XT"s have problems, as well as anyhting profile-style. Alot of the CF ones work size-wise, but I'm quite timid about clamping CF.
