Just in case anyone was planning on autocrossing their MSP on rims other then factory rims, here is the question I posed to the SCCA and their reply.

Doug,
My 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege comes from the factory with 17 inch wheels.
Does either of my elidgeable DS or STX classes allow for me to run a 16
inch wheel from another Protege model? I would of course rather skin a 16 inch wheel then a 17 incher due to the high prices of the 17 inch tires.
Thanks
Chris

Well, Chris, it's good news and bed news. I'll give you the bad news first so maybe the good will cheer you up before you finish this e-mail. Well, maybe?

If 16" wheels were not a factory option, they are not legal in DS. I looked at the Mazda website and the Mazdaspeed Protg looks like it only comes with 7x17" wheels. So you should run 7x17" wheels.

In STX, diameter and offset is unrestricted but width is limited to 8". You can use 16" wheels in STX.

Personally, I've damaged more wheels on the street than I ever have at
autocrossing. If the courses you run are designed conservatively by SCCA
"standards," I would think you'd less likely damage a wheel at an event than on the street.
