Mazdaspeed Protege 2003
Hello, I have a blue mazdaspeed protege 2003 and the other day I was drifting around in snow, after I killed the car by letting my foot off the clutch and having it in 1st. I tried to start it up but it sounded weird and would start the rpm needle would go up then slowly go down and then to 0 and the car would die. I didn't know what was wrong and then I tried leaving it there over night and came back the next day, the car turned on but wouldn't move far, it would die after about 10 feet and it would start to smoke. The oil check light came on but I'm not sure if that was the problem considering my next oil change was due in about 1k miles, but anyways do you guys know what it could be? The only thing i have on the car is a boost controller and i replaced the stock air filter with a k&N air filter. HELP

Probably oil starvation due to the lateral G Forces.

you may have spun a rod bearing.

yep, sounds like oil starvation.

proteges need the oil to be checked constantly

That's why I check mine every week, doesn't burn oil but better to be safe than sorry. People don't check their oil often enough.

its not just running with low oil...the factory oil pans do not do a good job of keeping the oil pick up saturated, even if its up to capacity...especially when cornering hard (i.e. 'drifting in the snow' maybe?)...

I'm fairly sure that if the oil were drained, there would be tell tale metal fragments in it.
