Mounting Subs: Standard vs Inverted

Can anyone explain how an inverted sub can produce the same bass as a sub mounted the standard way with the cone visible.

I don't know about the sound aspect, but the w6v2's cone is too darn good looking to hide it IMO.

doh! oh well :( Actually the rear of the sub is just as impressive....looks like some sort of re-enforced steel cage. Very attractive sub from both sides. Have you seen the rear view of a W6V2 yet?!
Once you see the pics I don't think you'll be dissapointed though....

I can't say that I've ever really been picky enough to tell the difference in sound if a sub is mounted inverted. Just remember that the speaker itself takes up volume inside the enclosure, and mounting it inverted effectively increases the total volume of the enclosure.

A sub will not be negatively effective unless there is not enough room around the cone, unabstructed by the basket, for air to move, theres always enough room.

There are a few benifits to mounting inverted. First the sub obtains a higher power handling since the voice coils heat has alot more air to disapate through, not trapped in a small sealed box. Also the box can be small but mor importantly thinner since it doesn't have to account fot the basket. Not to mention a grill is un needed.

The down side is usualy the setup will consume more room overall.

So there's no difference in sound what-so-ever?....
The reason they are doing the invert is because of the false floor set up. If you can imagine this: raising the floor about 2-3" and when it reaches around the back of the spare tire well it angles up towards the seats...kinda like a wedge box. Now if they mounted the sub standard they wouldn't be able to have enough clearance for the rear of the sub and still have the sides flush with the trunk (because of the way it flairs out about 7" back from behind the rear seats. We want the floor/box to fit tightly with the panels like it's part of the car. I dunno, it probably doesn't make any sense right now but it will when I get it back (hopefully today).

Nah...I talked to the installer this morning- he's not sure if he'll have it done by tonight. More than likely Sat. afternoon.

Update I dont have it back today (Saturday) and I might not even get it back by tonight. It kinda irritates me because they said they could have it done in 2 days and I said if they "needed" to they could go into sat. They insisted they probably wouldn't have to.....but now they say "IF" it's finished tonight it'll be around 9pm. The worst part is I think the installer is off on Sunday. If so this is bull. Granted I don't want them to rush but I DO want them to work on the damn thing. When I called today they still haven't installed the front speakers or dynamatted the doors. And the false floor panels still needed to be vinyl wrapped and dyed...aaaand the sub still needed to be mounted and amps/neons wired. UGH
I specifically told them they could have it an extra day so they wouldn't rush, not so they wouldn't work on it. The installer said he didn't get a chance to start on it today, when I called and it was at 2pm. :(

That sucks dude, but even though they said it would be ready today I'd rather have my car a day or two late with a well installed kickass sound sys than to have my car today with a so so install.

If it makes you feel any better, my install wont be ready until April (best case scenario :( ). Consider yourself lucky.

Talk to the manager ASAP.
If he doesn't respond or you don't want to call him let me know I will call them!

Craig, I'll be getting it back today at 2:30pm'ish. I didn't wanna push them and have them do a rush job- but I'm pretty sure they did do some other work than work on my car during the time it was there. It all unravells today, he said he did something special with the invert box and can't tell me. I don't know wether to be scared or excited. Either way I'll be sure to let you guys know.

I'll be picking it up in an hour or so but going right to my gf's house to catch the Eagles game. I wont be back till monday- so I wont be able to post pics and my reaction to the install.

I have a feeling, warrenty work came in. It happens alot and people that have busted remote starters are about the most pissed off people in the world, BUNCH OF PUSSIES! Anyways there were days when we left the bay at 2 am so we could finish jobs becuae of the amount of warrenty crap that came in we had to deal with.

Ok, got it back finally. Looks great sounds great. I'm only on for a few seconds right now but when I log-on later I have pics to show. My only concern at this point is when I have the system turned up and the bass is crankin....when I open the trunk from behind and take a listen from back there (with the hatch open) the subwoofer is making an audible noise as it vibrates. It's not a bass noise it's a noise from the actuall woofer. The only way to get it to go away is turn it way down to a level where you can barely hear the woofer. Maybe this woofer noise is normal and the sound of the cone excurting but I just figured I'd ask just to make sure. Note: when I'm in the car listening from the driver seat there is no bass distortion at all- so I'm hoping this is just the sound physically that the woofer makes excurting.

Most likey there is a speaker wire smacking the rear of the cone, The installer should make quick work of it.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Right behind the terminals there is a wide flat wire (4 wires wide, guess 2 for - and 2 for +) the cone might be contacting with this.
I had my friend take a listen as I varied the volume. When I really got on it on a specific song the speaker made a pop noise, almost like the voice coil bottomed out. Maybe my levels are set too high. Speaking of which what the HECK is the NF out setting on my Kenwood. It's a Non-Fader output- but it seems like it only affects the volume of the sub. What does it do, what setting should it be at. Unfortunatly I find when it's at a "flat" setting there isn't enough bass. And I really have to crank it to get it to perform....meanwhile the Bostons get so loud they start turning my eardrums into mush. So I've found turning the NF output setting up to +11 sounds perfect. GOOD amound of bass at moderatly loud listening level. However at this setting it sometimes makes this "bap!" noise every so often on certian frequencies. Like I said, sounding like it's bottoming or something. Any clue?

The NF is the sub volume control. It is doing exactly what it should, only adjusting the sub. You rasie and lower as you want more and less bass.

The popin concerns me. Sometimes mounting and remounting the sub fixes the issue. I hae personaly done this. Very weird but it works now and again. When I mounted my stores frist W7 it pooped like your describing then my boss un mounted and remounted it screwing it in like you would a spare tire and then it was fine.

I am sure you have already figured it out already but you are bottming out your sub from having the level up to high on the head unit. You need to keep the settings flat adn raise the gain on the amp.

NO the pronlem was solved, the hole for the sub was routered to small and the sub was conttacting it, all is well now.
