Mazda6 Double Barrelled Shotgun!!!

So, the rear glass on my 2008 Mazda6 got smashed by a rock kicked up by the neighbor's lawnmower. Sux - but that's life I guess.

My reason for this post is that as the glass guy was replacing the rear window, I was alarmed by what I saw.... a bunch of glass fell inside the rear panels where the side airbags reside. There was literally handfuls of broken glass shards laying right on the airbags. I asked the guy if he was planning to get all that glass out of there and he said no. He explained that the panels can't be removed without taking out the rear seats and a bunch of interior trim and that was something he could not do given the time constraints of a "normal" glass repair. He then told me that anytime you have broken glass, you are going to have a certain amount of it that never gets removed from the car. When I asked him if he thought it was dangerous to have a bunch of glass inside the panel with the airbag, he would not comment but agreed to try to "vacuum out as much as possible".

WTF! So if my side airbags go off, are they going to blast broken shards of glass out like a shotgun?

How hard is it really to remove those panels? I guess I will have to do it myself, since the glass company is obviously not going to do the job right.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?

(yes)

It can't be that hard, the folks that replaced my headliner dropped those panels (among with a bunch of others), and that wasn't a terribly long job.

The glass installer was able to "drop" the panels and vacuum up some of the glass. To get all of it, the panels need to be removed. By dropping the panels, I assume you mean removing the single visible screw and pulling them back away from the headliner. This would be fine for headliner work, but the panels only pull back a couple inches, so you cannot get all the way in there to get out the glass. The bottoms of those panels are definitely behind the seats.

Just two words... Holy crap.

You might send Tunersteve a PM. I know he has connections within the Mazda dealer network and may be able to give you an idea of how to take care of what you're talking about.
