Mazda5 Automatic

I am a new Mazda 5 driver. Can some clarify for me on steep hills does Mazda5 automatic transmission lock from rolling backwards when at a stop light?

Don't know about the hill holding abilities of the 5's auto trans. Is yours thed 4 or 5 speed auto?

BTW welcome to the forum.

Welcome. I've not owned auto trannies in long time but I've rented often.

IIRC no auto transmission will fully do so, so don't trust it. If you are not accelerating nor braking during a full stop on a steep hill auto cars may roll back and you will be feeling some subtle bumps like a reverse crank (safety mechanism?). The Mazda5 is "heavy" for the type of transmission and engine so it might be feeling even more.

Anyway, just apply the brakes when stopping, don't trust the car system. Also, when you park uphill/downhill, just apply the hand brake at all times, don't trust the "P" locking mechanism.

Hill Assist is generally a manual transmission feature, since auto transmissions generally are engaged whenever in "D" or a lower gear. The real question is whether the engine generates enough torque to keep the vehicle from rolling backwards on a hill. Not owning an auto, but having similar sized engine/overall weight vehicles, I would venture to say that on a moderate hill, yes the engine should overcome the grade, but in unusual hillsides (San Fran, Seattle, Rocky Mountains, etc) this vehicle will be like most 4-cylinder cars, so slippage will occur.
