Looking to improve MPG

i get about 280-300.
I once magically got 400, doing highway driving from Austin-Dallas-Austin, with some austin city driving on that tank. I don't understand it either, because I was not going anywhere close to 55 on the highway, closer to 85 probably.

It's amazing how much fuel you save when your aerodynamics improves drastically. They say that the average, decently aerodynamic sports car (not a Protege) loses about 30whp to air resistance at 65mph... something to think about. I'm going to start an aerodynamics thread. A lot of people forget about how much air resistance has to do with performance.

where does it say fuel injector cleaners are bad for the engine? can't find it in the manual. i thought it was engine oil additives that were harmful.
anyways... i NEED cats, i live in Cali, so i'm not risking the chance of getting those hefty emissions tickets. i'm even hesitant on putting a tbe exhaust (with cats) on my ride.
and yes, boost is addictive. imagine my 5.5 mile commute to work... hehhe... boosting on the nice straight aways..s
well, i'll see if the simple tune up this weekend will help.
I average about 30mpg driving highway and city. I usually fill up around 12.5 to 13 gallons left on the tank. I don't drive like grandma grandma. I accelerate "normally." The biggest thing I do to keep up my mileage is to keep the gas pedal in the same position no matter what when I cruise. Yes you'll slow down climbing a hill and yes you'll speed up going down a hill, but you are keeping the same amount of air into the engine. The ecu will stop fickling with a/f and give you better fuel burn. also, i try not to slam on the brake and quickly accelerate. i anticipate when to slow down and just coast. I also have my windows up and no a/c.
I got all these "tips" from watching an episode of BBC top gear. One of the guy on the show went 800 miles on 1 tank of diesel driving an audi v8 TDI. He used the same tricks.
ps - People will hate you when you drive like this. I've gotten tailgate all the time for this. and watch for the other driver not braking when they should, to avoid a fender bender.

changed plugs and oil, added injen, turbohoses smic and hardpipes.
latest mpg report: 361 miles when the light came on. filled up 11.932 gallons. equates to 30.25 mpg. this was with mix of city/hwy probably 60/40.

changed plugs and oil, added injen, turbohoses smic and hardpipes.
latest mpg report: 361 miles when the light came on. filled up 11.932 gallons. equates to 30.25 mpg. this was with mix of city/hwy probably 60/40.

One thing I love about my HKS CAMP is that it shows my fuel mileage at any given moment in addition to showing it in the trip meter. Only think I have to do is convert it from metric.
It's funny the variation you get. While doing some "spirited driving" with my brother, I was averaging a bit under 15 MPG. Then cruising home from Orlando, I averaged 32 MPG.

I here ya, i drive about 260 -290 depending on heat it has been over 100 with the heat index lately not to mention 90% humidity. I drive 50 miles a day minimally all city driving. when I fill up I put in 13- 13.5 gal. I have a theory about those of us seeing better mileage at 80 or so. Our cars make most of the HP and torque at the top end of the rpm band so it makes sense to think that higher cruising speeds means that your car is not working as hard to move itself. I don't know just a thought.

to get to higher cruising speeds, you're using more gas. even though our cars make higher hp and torque at higher rpm, that doesn't mean the car is not working as hard to move itself. if that statement was really the case, why aren't you cruising at 6000rpm in 3rd gear? anyways, i usually cruise at 70mph on the highways.. that's about 3100rpm, and out of boost.
