Hey all...this is my first post, as I just bought a new 2002 Protege 5.

I am looking to see what I can do to it asap. I have installed 17" Motegi Racing wheels with 205/40/17's on them.

I am also now looking to buy an intake system for it and wanted to hear all of your thoughts on which one to buy, and also what all has to be done after it is installed? For example...does it have to be rejetted or tuned at all?

Thanks,
Ryan

Personally....I have and like the INJEN CAI.....the ONLY thing you may have to do after install...is resetting of the ECU....no tuning or rejetting......just drive.

Click the "Search" button and type in "Intakes" and im sure you will find everything you are looking for. On my opinion, i think the Injen CAI looks, performs , and sounds the best. But if it floods really bad where you live i would prefer you buy the AEM short ram intake. I havent had to mess with my Injen CAI since ive gotten it, except to clean the filter with a filtercharger. I check and see if everything is nice and snug when i clean my engine, and thats like at once every 2 weeks. Peace!

i will also say go with the injen. not only does it work awesome, not too many look as good as it does. and like they said, install it and drive off spinning the tires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too have the Injen CAI ... and I love it... yes it looks good ... and its sounds great! I highly recommend it to anybody w/a Protege 8-}

Thanks for all the suggestions....sounds like Injen is the way to go. I live in Minnesota and will get some rain and snow, but no real flooding rains or waters.

Sir Nuke, you mentioned that you have to adjust the ECU? Can you tell me a little more about this, like what it is and how to go about adjusting it?

Sorry, I am a bit new to making modifications to cars besides the exaust system and plain old Air Filters.

Thanks,
Ryan

Your ECU will adjust itself over time..but can be reset by two methods. The easiest is to just unhook your battery and wait approx. 10 minutes. The other is to pull your fuse and follow several steps to allow your ECU to re-learn the air mixture..but I don't have the time to write right now....it may have been already posted before..Peace!

SOMETIMES...not always...but sometimes when you put on a new intake the computer will see something different and give you a CEL (check engine light) on the dash.....

SO.....to ensure this does not happen to begin with....before you start the intake install....remove the NEGITIVE battery terminal....remember the NEGITIVE terminal....hop in the car...press on the brakes a few times (this discharges a couple of capacitors in the system) and then do the install...when you are done, reinstall the battery cable and start up the car and allow it to idle for about 10 minutes....you are ready to go.

what this does is it deletes any information in the memory of the ECU dealing with previously measured air temps, air/fuel mixtures...that sort of thing....and seeing as how NOW all the information its getting is NEW...it won't be comparing it to the OLD information and thinking their is something wrong...which is why SOMETIMES you get a CEL.

I just got my Injen kit in the mail...woohoo..

I have been reading the install instructions and it says you have to take off the bumber. Is this an easy thing to do, or should I bring it to a shop and have it done?

i didnt take my bumper off, so i dont see why you should have to. if you loosen the fender well, and pull it back you can access the part of the car where the filter will be. it might take two people though, but to me it beats taking the bumper off. and all you need is a philips screw driver to take the front side of the fender well off.

I did the same thing... I just had one person hold the piping while I un-latched those screw-ish things to open the wheel well wall (www) and then slipped the filter w/ splash guard pre connected onto the piping and then fastend the clamps .... one thing to remember is that u need to have access to the screw side of the clamp so you can tighten it up around the pipe. Oh and use a short screwdriver if you've got one.

just my .02

do NOT, I repeat do NOT take off your bumper to do this install...I can not imagine why Injen wrote the install instructions like this...

insted go to protege5online.com and look in their TECH section, follow the links to the install instructions for the injen and print them out....use them....it tells you how to do this without taking the bumper off and its pretty simple....

Thanks to all of you who have posted here to help me out, espically you Sir Nuke. I have my Injen installed and it sounds and looks great!!!!

It took about me about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and I have very little car knowledge once it come to going under the hood.

So what are the next step for me to increase HP for a low price?

Thanks again to all.

depending on what you call a LOW PRICE>....I would say a decent CAT-BACK exhaust system.

Now that I have the Injen Intake installed....

I thought I would bring RAM-AIR. It looks like the filter is pretty much trapped where they put it. Did anyone open any part of the well to get air in there?

HP Increase

Im looking at geting an Ingen CAI. Was going to go turbo but decided the price wasn't in my range right now. I was also looking into a good cat-back. With the estimated increase in HP of a Ingen CAI at 7HP and a good cat-back, what would the potential total increase in HP be?

Depends. Say you do the Injen which is 7hp, and then a Racing Beat cat-back which is 4 the total would actually yeild a higher hp gain than 11. How much more I dunno. Anyone do extensive dyno runs with and without mod parts?
