Can you guys give me your choice on the best MP3/CD receiver out there? This is all new to me and I'm not sure who to trust. Who better to ask than everyone here! Think SoundDomain.com is the best priced site?

And lastly I'll probably just go with an upgrade to the stock speakers. Don't care about subs, amp, etc... Just a good crisp sound. Thanks!

ALpine CDA7998 reatail price - $800

You said the best.

THe first Alpin ethat can do it is the CDA-7894. Which features the V-Drive internal amp which is the most powerful headunit amp in the world. Damn thing has to be wired to the battery or it will blow stock fuses all day long.

Kenwood has some starting at $280 retail

Panasonics I think is $329

Eclipse doesn't make one!

Any places online I can check out these Alpine's? I checked sounddomain.com & crutchfield.com... They didn't list them under pro5's.

crutchfield does sell the 7894, last time I looked. Generally around 399.99. Really sweet unit, with so many features you need the manual to use it to it's fullest. And the fuse thing is right. The manual says a direct line is required, however the installers looked at me like I was crazy when I asked about the direct line. they ran it off the standard power. so far I haven't blown any fuses, but I don't push it much. anything over 20 starts to get painful.

I just got the Pioneer DEH-P840MP for Christmas (aint i lucky)... I will be installing it tonight (hopefully)...

but anyways, just to stay on topic, check out mmxpress.com for the CDA-7998

If you are not using the internal amp of the 7894 then you don't have to wire the power to the battery. However if you are using the internal amp I highly suggest going to the column or battery for power. So far i have seen around 10 Installs come back becuase the installer, usualy the customer, didn't wire to the battery. The decks have either blown stock fuses, generally sounded like ass, fried themselves and freaked out other vehical electronics.

Thanks for your help guys! I think I'm going to go with an Alpine model.

For now I have bought replacement speakers.

I highly reccomend using the same series of speaker for both the front and the rears. Also the better speaker should go in the front of the car, especialy with a component.

I would use these instead.

rears

speakers

Are you guys planning on putting the 5.25'' speakers in the front? will those fit in the 6x8 holes?

Personally i would go with the Kappa's instead of the Reference series, and if you know where to shop, they will cost about the same as Crutchfield is charging for the References...

DAMMIT! Well I've talked with Crutchfield and they told me to just refuse the package when it arrives and they'll refund my credit card. THEN I'll save some $$$ going with mmxpress or someone else... THANKS Cheese :D

Just remeber that Crutchfield is an authorized dealer for there products and damn neer no internet site is. So if you ever have a problem, YOU CAN NOT CALL THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY WILL NOT REPAIR IT, EVER!

1st mp3, can those 6.5" compnents fit in the front without modification to the door cavity? id like to put some good speakers up front but i dont want to have to modify anything on the car. are there any 5X7/6X8s that i should look at for up front? or are there any other sizes that would fit up there?
thanks

If you make a plate or buy the ones off of sounddomain for $5 a pair then you can fit a 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 in the front. Even a 6 1/2 component with a plate or modifying the sounddomain plate.

1st mp3, would you be able to post a link to the plate sold at SoundDomain.com?

cool thanks... but how would a custom fit adaptor let you fit a 6.5'' into a 6x8 opening without cutting? am i missing something here?

I made one for my car and it works fine. THe slight spaceing allows for the basket of the 6.5 to be at a smaller radius where it actualy goes through the hole not to metion a 6.5" speaker usualy has a mounting cut out of less then 6"
