Illumination with Alpine HU?

I just installed my Alpine 7995 Head Unit and it has an illumination lead.

I connected the lead directly to the blue and white wire that goes into the back of the factory harness. I have checked, double checked and triple checked, and the head unit is set up properly to dim when the headlights are turned on but it isn't working.

Any ideas/suggestions? I did a search and that's how I found out about the blue and white wire that doesn't have a wire on the harness, but haven't been able to find any solutions for people whose head unit just isn't dimming like it's supposed to.

Thanks!

Did you cut off the factory harness. if you did I won't help I'm sick of this stupidity.

If you did then lets see if I can help. On any wire harness adapter blue white is the wire for amplifier remote turn on not illumination. Orange is typicaly the illuminations for after amrket radios and wire harness adapters. However when dimmers get involved sometimes there is more then one orange wire. One may be orange white the other Orange black. The wire will ususaly say right on it which you have and The packageing will also.
My head unit dims just fine. But you have an Alpine, like me. Usualy an alpines display is the only thing that dimms the buttons do not. Any car that has an illumination wire in the harness will also have one in its wire adapter.

I did not cut off the factory harness, no I am not that stupid.

The Wire coming out of the alpine is Orange and clearly marked. I am talking about the wire on the car end.

But the wiring harness did not include a wire for illumination. Now I am perplexed by this, because searching through the forums it looks as though folks here have been successfull in getting dimming in their P5s.

Everything is connected through a wiring harness to the factory connector and no wire was on the harness for illumination.

That's too bad the buttons don't dim on the Alpine, that's the worst part at night, those BRIGHT blue buttons. I thought it was strange that white and blue would be illumination/dimmer as I am aware that these things are color coded, but after searching and looking at pin outs it looked the blue/white wire was the illumination. It didn't have anything connected to it on the harness that I have.

Not knowing what it is I wouldn't use it if I were you. Whos adapter did you use?

I just got an uplcose picture of one of the adapter, it doesn't seem to have an illumination lead. I will check to see if the metra does.

I think I found the answer tonight, I did have it hooked up right, I didn't think I did it wrong. Turns out with the alpine head unit you have to actually turn the wheel down for the dimmer and dim the dash lights before the unit will actually dim. Also it dims both the buttons and the display area on mine :D but the buttons are still really bright. Oh well, I'll learn to live with it, I love the stereo.

Your connected to the dimmer wire not the illumination wire.
The illumination wire will dim the deck a set amount when you turn you lights on.
