How to clean the windshield?

My windshield is extremely blurry and has streaks all over the place when a wiper goes across, so today I bought some rain-x, ready to give it a good cleaning and rain-x application.

Normally when I wipe my windshield with a wet cloth, I can clearly see the area where the windshield wipers normally pass. There is a clear line between where they wipe, and the area it never wipes. Outside is a sort of reflective, bright surface, while inside the wiper area is dark, clear looking glass. Now, this is on every car I've bothered to notice, but I thought it was because the area outside wasn't clean.

So I first wiped every inch with a good amount of windex, to get all the dirt off. No change. So I decided to try a bit of isopropyl alcohol. Nope, same as before, just as big a difference between the two areas. So I tried some goo-gone afterwards, and it still doesn't do anything. I was getting impatient, so I just thought oh well, I'll just finish cleaning up the windshield and apply some rain-x.

Then I remembered that my wipers are probably pretty dirty so I wiped them with some isopropyl, and it created a huge dark black smear on the paper towel. I thought, wow, that's dirty, so I wiped it again. And again. And again. And it wasn't until about the fifth time, with almost no cease to the black stuff coming off, that I realized it might be the rubber being wiped off! I still don't know what it was, I've cleaned rubber things with alcohol before and it didn't do any apparent damage, so I hope I didn't just kill my wiper blades.

Well, onto the rain-x, I applied it twice as per instructions, and then wiped it off until crystal clear. Hopefully it works okay, and hopefully my windows were adaquately clean. It's supposed to rain tomorrow morning when I drive so I'll try it out and let you guys know.

So I guess my questions are, is my window clean from windex and a wipe of alcohol? And what causes the apparently permanent difference between the wiper path and the corners?

I just use windex.

but they lied. it doesn't leave a streak clean shine, or however that goes.

i feel your pain, somewhat.

get rain X windshield washer fluid. After using it for a while there is a permanent coat on there

windex + newspaper.

you can also claybar it, or go over it with a razor blade.

windex and newspaper works well.

for the inside, i find my windows haze after a week though.

Use a paint cleaner and/or clay to really clean the windshield.

As for your wiper blades, you probably were removing some color from the rubber. It's a good idea to clean your blades every week or two, because if there's crap on your blades, they won't wipe the glass well. You'll get lots of streaks.

And if you wax your windshield, it will be much easier to clean in the future. There's also a conditioner for wiper blades (303 Wiper Treatment). I used that on my wiper blades on my Maxima, and I had the same blades for over 2 years, and they still worked like new when I sold the car.
On the Protege, I bought new blades a couple weeks ago, and went with the $10 Bosch Micro Edge blades. They're way more expensive than the cheaper Anco (or other cheap) blades, but I'll likely have them for the rest of the time I own the car, so I don't mind the hefty price. I condition them with the 303 treatment every few weeks.

you can use water, and amonia 30 to 1 mix,use unprinted news paper.
after that use a arosal glass cleaner.

you can also use dust removal rags for paint.

Laser - have you applied any protectants to the dash? That haze is often caused by plasticizers in the dash evaporating. You have a relatively new car, so they may still be evaporating. I'd try applying a protectant to the dash...that may help the haze problem.

Okay it finally rained today, and the rain-x really does wonders. Going at speeds above 60km, the drops literally just move themselves off the windshield. Everything looks very clean and clear now, no problem with dirty looking windshield. When the wipers go across there's still severe streaking, but it doesn't obscure vision because not enough water even stays on the windshield to do that. Maybe I just need new wipers... any specific type of wipers good, or is the regular cheap stuff fine?

sorry for the semi-threadjack, but has someone used diamondite before? i heard good things, but wanted some 1st hand experiences... thanks

Get the reflex wipers from CT...they are the best wiper blades I have ever bought

I use this spray s*** that we have at TCD i forgot the name but ill get it tomarrow. this and newspaper is the absolute best for cleaning windows no streaks, no lint and it has a nice smell to it. Im positive u can find it in any auto supply store mabye pep boys/autozone.

I bought the Bosch Micro Edge blades a couple weeks ago. They're expensive, at $10 and $12, but I don't use my wipers to clear off bugs/ice, and I clean/condition them every week or two. So IOW, my wipers are treated like royalty, and they will certainly last me a LONG time.

Laser - There are lots of good protectants out there...it all depends on the look that you want. There are products that give a glossy look, semi-gloss, matte, you name it. I prefer a natural matte finish, so I like several products, including Poorboy's Natural Look, 303 Aerospace Protectant, and Sonus Total Eclipse. Of course, like most of my stuff, it's very difficult to find locally. Although I believe 303 is available at most marinas and boat dealers. It may also be available at places that sell patio furniture.

Otherwise, you can get them here:

Total Eclipse:

PB's Natural Look:

303:

If you're looking to buy something locally, I'm sure there are lots of products available at any parts store. I don't have much knowledge of locally-bought products, because I've been dissapointed with the quality of most of the consumer-line products that you'll find at local stores.
I can tell you that I DON'T like Meguiars NXT Tech Protectant on dashboards. I find it to be too glossy for dashboards. More gloss = more glare.
I like NXT Tech Protectant on other interior items, like shift boots. Just not on dashboards.

About the newspaper, doesn't it have... well, you know, ink? Seems unbelievable to me that it could actually have cleaning effects.

I asked the guy at work if he ever heard of using news paper and he was like oh yeh you never heard of that it works awsome and leaves no streaks at all.

I've never used it myself, but I know many people that swear by using newspaper. They say it's streak-free every time. But I've also heard that your hands get full of ink, so make sure you wash your hands before touching the seats or anything.
