How Hot are our manifolds/downpipes?

Right now I'm trying to figure out which ceramic coating to get. Beleive it or not "Jet Hot" which in my eyes is one of the best coating companies is right down the street from my work. That will save me Lot$ of shipping costs. The only downer is that at that location they only do the jet-hot sterling coating, which only protects up to 1300 F.. The Jet-Hot 2000 is the better coating but is done in Mississippii and will cost me a grip for shipping.

How hot do our downpipes and manifolds get? Would the Jet-Hot sterling suffice? If so-I'd love to go with it, it looks NICE and is a bit less expensive.

:D

Cool, thanks. :)

I was just going to say if they were close, and they charged something outrageous, I could have picked it up and shipped it cheaper... but Pascagoula is a long ways off. ;) Good luck!

hehe Thanks!!! I think I'm going to go with the Sterling. Honestly it will cost me like 150$-200$ less and it will look pretty darn cool.

Grah! I can't beleive I'm even having to ask this question. I have an EGT guage that still isn't hooked up.

If my memory serves me correctly, when I had my RX7, the EGT was about 1700 degrees F. This was enough to make the manifold glow red hot after running it hard. My guess would be that you should be fine with the 1300 F coating because piston engines run significantly cooler than rotaries. If only I could find my EGT gauge, then I could get a reading from my Protege manifold.

My EGT sensor is installed on my downpipe, about 2" from the turbo. When I'm runing smooth the temp is between 800F and 1000F. When on the boost, it go up to around 1200F.

Manifolds on 4 cyl ,motors operate at the 1300-1500 range. After the turbo like lets say a downpipe the temps are about 150-250 degrees cooler so ther operating range is generally around 1100-1300 degrees. (these temps are at WOT)Rotaries run hotter than 4 bangers and 6 cyl's run cooler generally about 200 degrees less than what we are at

Hmmm. So it would be cutting it close to get the Jet-Hot sterling-which protects up to 1300 degrees. It's going to cost me about 200 bucks to get everything coated with the sterling- and I'd say almost twice that for the Jet-Hot 2000 which protects up to 2400 degrees. Just some food for thought- the Jet Hot 2000 only comes in flat black and flat grey.

What should I do?

Cooler temps. Coating hte manifold and downpipe and cool the temps by 300 degrees- which means more power. Also, the corosion factor is a big one.

For those of us out here in the Soutwest where 120 degree summers aren't an oddity- it's almost essential.

SMP your manifold will dull and eventually chip off in a years time with the coating you want......but it does look trick.

Terry, thanks for the feedback. It hink I will go with the sterling silver stuff. It will save me much more money, and I'm not even sure if I'll have my same manifold in a year (wink wink).

Here's another question: Is it worth the time and money to get the turbo housings coated as well? Or is this mainly an asthetic thing?
