- 03' Silverado, 03' P5
I think this is my first race in my P5, if I am not mistaken. Normally I don't try anything of this sort, unless I am in my truck.
Anyways, I had to go and buy gas last night about 9:30 outside of town on a four lane road fairly close to my house. It's basically uninhabited for about 8 miles with the interstate on one end and a community college on the other. I stopped at a Texaco on the interstate end to get some gas and pull in beside a Bright Blue Honda Del Sol... It is sitting on the ground (I'm don't know much about that sort of s***, but the guy said it was bagged?), huge heavy looking blue wing, a bunch of stickers on the front quarter panels, very large chrome wheels and a massive muffler. The car was nice and clean, but pretty damn gawdy IMHO.
There were two guys riding in it, probably 18 y/o's or so... Since I was gassing up in the lane beside them, they came over and asked about my P5. They seemed to like it... The passenger said it was too bad that mazda 4 cyls didn't make power like a Honda. I shrugged and nodded, just wondering what he was getting at... I figured the Del Sol was one of the VTEC models, since he was talking about all sorts of Cam Controllers and other s*** that I was ignoring... Well... I managed to put about 5 gallons of gas in my car by the time they went in to pay. I figured they were going to the College at the end of the HWY in the same general direction I was, so it might make for an interesting trip. I waited in the car for them to leave, as followed them as they waved for me to do so. Just driving behind the car, I could hear the muffler, very loud and Tinny sounding... And when the guy would shift, it's like he rode the clutch for a second or two... Strange stuff..
At any rate, we lined up a light a little ways down the road. The passenger rolled his window down and told me that he hoped I wouldn't take to loosing too badly. I said no problem, and pretty much figured that was what would happen. I bring the Rpm's up to about 2250 or so, and side-step, quickly slipping the clutch, and launching with a light chirp of the tires... a really nice launch, without bobble for once. Through 1st gear, I kept about a .5 C.L. advantage... Through 2nd gear, I gained about a 1 C.L. on top of that... I went ahead and ran 3rd until about 80MPH and let off, where I probably ended up about 3.5 or 4 C.L.'s ahead... I started slowing back down, and the Del Sol goes screaming by and Full thottle, just about making my ears bleed. Up ahead a little bit, he slows back down to about 50MPH, to let me catch up... I put it in 3rd, and pull up beside him... I had never tried that before, but the P5 in 3rd @ 50MPH, has some really nice roll on accelleration.. I pulled very steadily from that speed to about 75 really quickly, leaving him 20 or 30 feet behind.
We keep going down the road for a ways, and then finally he the passenger motions for me to pull over in a used car lot. We get out and talk for a little bit, and then he decides to show me the engine in the Del Sol. It was a Damned 1.5L... It was the Del Sol S just like my sister has... He did have an intake, different wires it looked like, and some sort of blue header. I was hoping somehow that is was an SI, but nooooo... lol. Oh well, it was fun... and the guys seemed to be pretty cool about it. I guess they were probably used to losing in that damn thing, who knows... Oh well, figured I would share.
