even though you've said you already have a metal briefcase, you are potentially going into an environmentally hostile (sand, water, other crap) area, and it sounds like you are wanting to primarily protect your electronics/toys. we use these (http://www.pelican.com/cases/cases.html) to carry around our crypto devices and anything else (test equipment) we want kept safe yet easily carryable. damn near indestructable, lockable, waterproof, and comes with its own foam. not exactly inexpensive, but worth it to keep your goodies safe.

another thing to look into would be some sort of solar charger, since you mentioned the possible lack of electricity. I don't know if you could find one that would be adaptable to charging everything you have, but it could be useful. Also look into something like an iGo (igo.com) universal power adapter. just get the necessary tips for all your gear and only have to lug around ONE power supply for everything. nice way to save some weight/space.

sorry, been offline for a bit. I'm assuming they can probably be purchased online, but not sure where. I can ask some of the guys who use them at my work, but I'm not sure if they just requisitioned them from navy supply or had them ordered.

From mil to mil...take a WHOLE LOT of baby wipes...trust me. That's all you really need.
Oh, you'll need a good set of goggles (the sand storms there are ridiculous). Ummm, depending on your job, be ready to have uniform after uniform shipped to you. In a course of 4 months...you'll go through a good amount (well, working on the flight line at least)...AIR TRANSPORTERS!!

plenty soft and somewhat tough (doesn't rip or tear:good for making cutouts for your stuff with a knife)
