Good News About Hesitation!

Good news!

I have my car at the dealer again cause my speaker enclosure is rattling and I just received an interesting message from the assistant service manager. He said that Mazda has found a way to correct the Mazdaspeed hesitation problem by means of flashing the PCM, duh! He said that the new map is ready to go and just waiting on EPA approval! That is great news, cause Im sick of the hesitation crap. My car actually backfires when it starts hesitating & running rich. Has any one else received this promising news???

:D

Well that sucks for those of us that just bought the FP reduction kit. This is a solution that is guaranteed to be under warranty. DOH! I guess patience really is a virtue........

I have a question, and please don't flame me, but, if the fix leans out the fuel map what happens when we eventually turn up the boost?

Will there be enough fuel ? or will Joe P. have to come up with a fuel pressure riser kit. ;)

Don't mind me I have not slept in two days. :(

Ouch.. The thing is I would let one or two well-experienced people get it first and possibly even dyno before and after. They may do something like pull out a ton of timing and then lean it out. While the hesitation will be gone, the car will not make the same power- AND once they flash it, there is no getting your old mapping back :).. Dodge did this with their trucks- they had detonation problems while towing, so they had a flash that had a lot less advance to it- no more detoantion, but the people that got it done are cursing it due to the power loss. The people in the know named it "the death flash" :)..

I will also call around to see if this is true- most service guys will just say that to shut you up :).. My service guy and Mazdaspeed tech here both said that Mazda did that for a reason and probably will not offer a flash for it.

People who have turned the boost up are still running rich. So I would see no problem with the using Joe's FP kit at a higher boost levels. I would always be cautious though. Monitor your AF.

I didn't call the Service tech to ask if there was a fix, he called me to let me know about the call he had just got from Mazda. I hope it's true!

OK, cool.. As mentioned- be careful- if it pulls timing and such, you will lose power that you can never get back :)..

God damit laptopheaven, were the hell you been?? J/K

But really, I could have used you MSP FAQ page two days ago, instead of annoying the hell out of everyone.

Confirmed. There is a "fix" and I will call........again.......to see what is all involved. If it is a power puller. Im not gettin it, I will fix it with aftermarket parts.

If it just leans fuel a bit, but leaves my power levels the same, Ill keep it. I can take my dyno sheets to the dealerand show them it. Also let them know my numbers better stay the same. :D

What do you mean by pull timing? Are you Saying Retard timing? Retarding the timing as far as I know would reduce the chance of pre-detonation and pinging. I have always retarded timing and run one-step colder plugs on my turbo cars that were running high boost. All I know is that my car is backfiring now when it starts running rich and that is ridicules! Ill be happy to get it done, and if the car continues to run like crap Ill get rid of it all together.

At high boost, yes, you will need to pull a couple degrees of timing. But for the average guys running 8-9 psi with no detonation issues, it will just rob power from them if the flash has less aggressive timing. You will make more power at higher timing and boost if you do things to prevent detonation- good fuel, cooler air charge, etc. You have to remember- Mazda has to keep it safe for EVERYONE to cover it under warranty- we can run the timing and a bit more boost, but they also have to consider the guys that buy the 87 octane from the local quickie mart also- that is why I am worried they will pull some timing also..

If it touches the timing curve, I am not going near the flash :).. My car is running with no hesitations and pulls like a ***** ape- I am not letting them take away from that :).. I am curious what they do though :).

Crap- backfiring? Under boost or when you let off the gas? That sucks.. Mine will let out a little pop when I decelerat sometimes, but that is only since I did the exhaust.

um...what terrible childhood experience has led you to coin the phrase "pulls like a ***** ape"?

ouch.

um, so anyway - any way to verify this w/ other dealers/techs?

Heheh- I have just always heard it, and it just stuck with me, I guess..

I called my service guy and he said they would have no way of finding out if it is in the works, only when it is available  .. Whatever.. Probably just too lazy to make a call :).

No hesitations? Where? How does it run in the humid hot Florida weather? Ill just up the boost a hair if the timing curve changes, s*** I always run at least 93 in the tank. Im going to slap your kit on tonight and test it in this muggy weather to see if the hesitation goes away. If it does go away, then F the flash. Ill leave it be.

I actually designed the kit when I was in FL :).. I would pull the weather strip off as mentioned to help reduce the under hood temps also. The two together compliment each other nicely.

I agree with you about running a bit more boost if they drop timing, but then when you do want it (for those like me who also want more timing and boost on race fuel at the track or something), it will hurt.
