Getting boost spikes in 30degree weather

I usually don't go above 5psi on my boost gauge at WOT and then suddenly this morning when taking of from a stop light I hit 6psi but nothing happend sound wise or engine wise. I know this much I broke my tires loose in 2nd for the first time, since I don't usually push it to the limit. Been babying it for the first 400 miles. The way I have my setup...my chargepipe doesn't really ever get hot even in prolonged driving conditions...The manifold on the other hand is piping hot need to wrap it up for the time being, I got steam coming off my hood when it rains it is that hot.

Yeah, I think I may invest in som Thermal Wrap until I can get my Downpipe coated. I used to sometimes spike to 7 PSI, but not lately.

hmmm boost spikes? Wow, I don't think I've ever had that happen. But then agian I have a electronic Boost guage that is in MMHG not psi. So then it might not strike me until I figure out the conversion. I usually stay right around .5-.65 bar.

What causes the spikes? Linux, how would coating/heatwrap help it from happening?

Actually I don't think the wrapping will help the boost spike any(It's mainly to keep the temps down in the engine bay I think)....the reason we get boost spike in cold weather is due to the cold air...we are able to cram and compress more air due its properties in low temps....hence more psi

Scott, what Deepcover said. I was refering to two seperate issues.

talk to spoolin. i remember him talkin to some one that he sold his stage 2 kit to. and he told him to watch the boost when the temp is around 30 F. So he should tell you how to avoid it.

I think that was Deepcover..

YOur all nuts, and I never spiked!

And I am in NH, the coldest place on earth. Well maybe not but its not far off. SMP or Linux can I move in with you guys? I'm sick of my car door being frozen shut in the morining!

Bahhahaha frozen shut!!! ahaha Man! It was 35 this morning and I nearly shat my pants.

How cold is it there in NH?

Well we had a temperature spike for a few days when it was averaging 40 degrees, but about 2 weeks ago we where having highs of 30 and soon it will be highs of 20. Noghts will hit -10 with windchill. sometimes it hits 0 without windchill.

Yeah, when I got in the car this morning, it was like 30 on my temp readout! This was at 8 A.M, sun comming up and all!! On my way to my parents, I noticed that I bogged the 1st couple of times I hit boost. And after that, no problem? :wtf:

Linux you have a emp readout? Is it a guage?

It's in my rear view mirror. It also has a compass. and dims when you get headlights from behind at night. I got it here:

Mazdastuff.com

Easy to install. Took about 30 minutes.

Pics I just took:
Here is the mirror installed:

I had to use a Infared Filter for the temp/compass due to daytime glare:

Deep the reason why your getting boost spike is because of your bypassed cats, 3 inch exhaust and cold ass weather. This is a common occurence. However turbo cars run just fine in the cold winter months. Deep just keep an eye on the boost gauge. If you are still getting creep pass 5 psi call or email me and we may have a solution for you

hmmmmmmmm

I have noticed one thing recently, in first I usually barely make it to 1psi at 2700rpm and then in second I kick it to almost 5psi at 3100rpm.....in third if I floor it, my boost gauge needle hits 5psi in a flash and then creeps to 6psi.....
On another subject....my charge pipe has remained amazingly cool even in hard runs. I don't know...but I think the CAI does make somewhat of a temp difference(only heat that I can make out is from the manifold which I shall be wrapping this week)....but then again this is winter...could be different in the summer.

I think I have finally joined the club of the boost spike. Either that or my clutch is going out faaaast  .

This morning I was going to work, it was 30 degrees out, and I punched it without really warming her up. The RPM's shot up like hot cakes as did the boost, but without any real gain in mph. I tried this in almost every gear... and it did it in almost every gear... Then around lunch time once it had reached the 50's I drove her around a bit more and warmed it up. Then it wasn't happening.

Is this a boost spike, or a fair warning that the clutch will shat on me?
