first time in the snow with the MSP

So I am in my 10th year in the Army, and I am again in training in MO. So we got some snow, and we are getting more. The roads were completely cover under a couple of inches for most of the day. I was getting bored in my apartment so I decided to see how my 152xxx mile lsd(never been touched) would work. I was pleasantly surprised. It was slippery and not quite like the dsm awd that I am used to but it drove fine and I feel confident that I will be fine in the next couple of weeks with more snow on the way.

BTW I am on kumho ecstas, I know that they are not good snow tires but they seem to work fine at speeds less than 35mph

What are some of the other MSPer's tips for driving in the snow?

Oh and I am from the southeast so I dont get to see too much snow, and if I do I am usually in a awd dsm. This is the first time I have ever driven a 2wd car in the snow

LOL ... don't if you can help it. Be careful, the RacingHarts get packed with snow and will shake like a b*tch!!!!

Some people around here wouldn't drive theirs in snow. Personally i do, and it does fine with a full tank of gas. Added that im also on rubber band tires (neo gens ect some crap like that with no tread). But seriously if your a capable enough driver snow, ice, a hurricane idc you should be able to drive in it.

^^ lol same thing happened to me with my enkies lol. They got snow in them, and being this my first time driving in snow i didnt realize it would through off my wheels that bad. Thankfully i eventually figured it out.

yeah I noticed the racing harts just scoop up snow and at 35mphs it felt like I have 4 square tires lol

i drove around the in nice big snow storm we just got here in NJ.....25" and on the way home from work, as long as i didn't stop, i was fine. stopping was eh, (i need new tires and brakes anyway) and accel sucked. but once i was moving i was prefectly fine

I've said it a thousand times, but I'll say it again -- unless you have snow tires on your car, or a damn good set of all seasons on your car for just an inch or two of snow and a good amount of experience to boot, YOU SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING IN SNOW.

I can't tell you how many threads I've seen about banged up MSPs because people were driving in the snow on inappropriate rubber. It's a situation that can be avoided so easily!

It's a few hundred dollars on a set of 'eh' wheels with appropriate winter tread that could save you thousands down the road.

And THAT is my biggest tip for driving a MSP in the snow.

Of course, snow tires won't always save you -- I can certainly speak from experience on that one -- but they're the first step to keeping your car in one piece.

We're expected to get 3-5 inches of snow tomorrow morning and I've never driven my MSP in snow before. I'm pretty nervous about it since I don't have snow tires. :-\ If it's too bad, I might just call in to work.

we got barely half an inch here in south central PA, my apartment complex managed to turn it into a sheet of ice. how is it that i managed to drive when we got 17 inches and it was compacted but not on a tiny ass sheet of ice. figures i start my internship today and i gotta go back out there and attempt to make it across half a mile of frozen parking lot.

well Im not buying $400 snow tires for 3 more weeks that I will be training here. I live in alabama and i dont need snow tires. on top of that my buddy just bought a 01 S4 for cheap and it has some good winter tires.........so I am riding with him.....especially since I did all the leg work and found this S4 for 6k and it has been sitting in a garage for 2 years! So he owes me. We are getting 4 inches tonight to go ontop of the 1-2 inches left so I am done driving for a while.....thank god

Nice job on the S4!

yeah......i think I will buy it off of him.......he really doesn't know much about them and I have had 3 audis. It needs some simple attention that he has no idea how to give

I had REALLY good (top rated all seasons) tires on last wenter and the MSP drove like a dream, unless im in FRESH snow (like a 1/2 inch or more) going about 40, then I would be Effed. (cause the snow I get is always slippery)

I've got a set of steelies with dedicated winter rubber on them. I drive past most 4wd trucks when it snows, and up here in Minnesota, it snows real good :)

Never been stuck in the MSP, but it's slow to get moving when starting on ice or deep snow. As long as I move where I want it to, it's good enough for me.
