First drive in the snow!!!

Anyone in the New England area probably knows how their car handles in the snow, but today I got my first experience today on my lunch break. There is about 5" of wet heavy snow on the ground and I was up to the challenge.

The light weight of the car helps it ride right on top the snow. Only once, merging onto the highway, did I feel it pull to one side as the stock rubber lost its grip. I felt in control while changing lanes on the highway and even cruised at 45mph in the passing lane for a while. Please note that this was in moderate traffic before the roads had been plowed at all. Picture the snow piling up in between lanes. The abs brakes worked perfectly as I took a sharp turn a little to fast. They helped keep the car moving in the right direction.

I also enjoyed being able to see through my back window. Thanks to the rear wiper I was able to back my car into a parking spot so I can get out easier this evening.

The car has very good weight distribution between the front and back. A Nissan Pickup truck fish tailed in front of me after hitting the brakes, but I had no problems slowing down. I was also amazed at how well it handled under my mediocre manual driving skills. This is my first 5spd and I've only had it for less than a week.

I suspect I will have trouble tackling steep hills when I encounter them. The begining of next season I will invest in a decent set of snow tires.

In conclusion, I felt just as confident as anyone else on the road today. I am glad I didn't purchase a Subaru. Granted they will get better traction on those hills, but the price and looks of the MP5 far outweigh that IMO.

What are your thoughts on driving in the snow?

my mp3 with snow tire is awesome in the snow. You will see a huge improvement with the snowtires. Only problem seems to be ground clearance in too much snow. You really gotta lock em up to get the car to slide, just pump the brakes and downshift to slow down and all will be well. I've had my mp3 in some pretty deep snow up in VT.

I don't know if I'm all that happy with my mp3 w/ snow tires. I have 16" blizzaks on and seem to have trouble. My brother has a 92 sunbird with tiger paw snow tires or something and he can go much better than I can. Don't konw if the weight of the car makes any difference or not. Especially our driveway. He can pull right up it, I have to get a running start out of the garage. even then I'm spinning like a bastard. I think next time I have to replace these I'll get arctic alpines or something else. Maybe even cheap out and get the tiger paws since they are doing my brother so well.

I am getting better with my MP5. I traded in my A4 Quattro....big difference now. I will also get some Snow Tires next season. Once the car is going it is all good. Going up hills at slow speeds is tough.

PA_MP3_Man,
I don't think that the tires are the problem. I sometimes have the same issue on inclines. I think the MP3's biggest problem is the lack of LSD. Once that tire gets spinning, it goes like mads and wants to shred the tire. It sucks, and be careful not to spin it too much. The soft Blizzaks (I have them too) will wear REALLY fast if you spin them, even on ice/snow.

I was driving today...In NJ and we had hail...lots of hail...I was on the major highway Interstate 287...and I was doing like 50 mph with out any problems...but once i got on the back roads...it was back to 30 mph..with some problems w/ traction...I used second gear to start b/c 1st gear would just spin!!

Yeah we had that hail here to. But it was pretty early in the morning around 7:30 or so. It was like a downpour of hail too, not just a slow trickle. Definately caused some bad conditions here. yeah inclines are definately my worste problem since that's what my driveway is. I didn't think I would wear them out as bad as you say. They seem like they do extremely well in slush and wet snow but the dry snow it just starts spinning. Maybe my tire pressure has something to do with it. What are you guys running? I have 16" wheels. I don't know if that should make a difference or not. Thanks

I beleive you have a point there..most people that go off road w/ their vehicles..or go AutoX lower the pressure in their car...

I think my pressure is 30psi both front and back...but don't quote me on that!

Yeah I think I was running 32 in the front and 26 in the back. Think if I let some air out in the front it'll get a little better grip?
