EGR valve problem?

Hello Everyone,

This ones got me perplexed.

I was gone for a month (while wife drove car), and when I got back I took our 2000 Mazda protg 1.6L out on the road and when I accelerated hard or went up hill I had pinging noise coming from the engine.

The check engine light was on, I pulled the code and it was P0172- rich fuel mixture. It listed the probable cause as high fuel pressure, leaking injector, dirty MAF sensor, stuck open EGR valve.

Easiest solution was to put in a higher octane fuel, ran through two tanks with fuel injector cleaner, cleaned the MAF sensor, changed oil, cleared the code, no more check engine light, however it runs the same way. There is no decrease in fuel efficiency.

When I check under the hood and go through a range of RPMs (either slowly increasing rpms and gunning it ) I get no pinging sounds at all. I only get the pinging when I am moving.

If all else fails read the manual-

I looked at my Haynes manual (not great manual, but it works), in the troubleshooting section, and there is a section that addresses pinging or knocking engine sounds during acceleration or uphill Their solutions are 1. incorrect fuel grade (I put I high grade) 2. engine control system problem 3. fuel injector system problem 4. improper or damaged spark plugs or wires (had changed them this spring with mazda wires and stock NGK plugs) 5. EGR valve not functioning 6. vacuum leak (no leaks that Ive found).

Ive looked at some of the postings on this and other websites. It seems that I could have a malfunctioning EGR valve, and that it might not throw a code. The code that I initially had (P0172) had a possible cause as stuck open EGR valve. Supposedly a stuck closed EGR will cause pinging.

What is your opinion on this? What else could cause this pinging? How do I troubleshoot the EGR valve to make sure it is working properly? If it is the EGR valve, may I clean it, or is it replace only?

Thanks again everyone!

1.6L 226k miles, never a problem (besides pesky sensors, and running into deer)

All-right everyone-

I wanted to post what the root of the problem was. Ends up being a leaky gasket between the converter and exhaust manifold- tightened the bolts up a bit more and no more pinging- I like those fixes! Didn't even have to get out the baling wire and duct tape!
