Custom Turbo

'01 Mazda Protege LX 2.0L
So I'm looking at adding a turbo to my '01 Protege, but I want to lessen the cost and use parts from other turboed vehicles. I'm looking for parts from other vehicles I can use, mainly the turbo itself and the intercooling system. I know there are some parts that I'm going to have to buy that are necessary and can't be found at a junkyard, but I'm only worried about the main parts. My father is a mechanic so I can have him double check the parts before I use them if need be. So the main questions are, "What vehicles am I looking for, and whats parts off of them?", and "What parts am I going to have to order to make this work?". Now I know some of the junkyards around here so if I were to guess I would have to say that for the intercooling system, and the turbo itself I can get for about or under $500. So the other parts I'm hoping to keep under $200 if there aren't any really special parts that I'm going to have to order.

And yes I know, this is a hell of a project and will take some time. Luckily (well not really), I just got fired and have more than enough money saved to hold me over till I get a new job, and to complete some of my projects on my car. And with that comes LOTS of time to complete those projects. So I say hello to project #1.

I doubt you will find anything useable at a junkyard. If you need I have a FMIC with piping and an ebay BOV that I am looking to sell soon.

Actually some of the junkyards around here are pretty good. Most of the cars that are turboed are ones that the people from the ritzier parts of town thought were junk and they're actually in pretty good shape, if not for some body damage. I have found some Saabs, Volvos, and so forth that are most definitely turboed. But I need to know what I'm looking for exactly.

Ok, so another question. If I were to get 4 to 1 headers, what other *inexpensive* part or collection of parts can I get to get some more pull at the lower end? Say 1k to 3k RPM range, and $400 limit.

No turbo. I might in the near future if my job interview goes well, which I'll just buy a full turbo kit. Also, anyone know what needs to be changed to make an auto a standard. I have 2 part cars in the yard with manuals, and I'd like to put one in mine. Engines shot in one, and the other my father plans on fixing. Both have good transmissions.

Search there's lots of info for auto to manual swaps.

Turbos use manifolds not headers. I think the only options are stock Calloway on the msp or the steed speed

Yes I know, I'm talking about before the turbo upgrade with the 4-1 headers. And I know there is. I shouldve been more specific. My dad keeps saying you need to swap the lower block. True or False? I just need to know if its that drastic or not to convince him to let me use the garage.

A header will help with top end power and will actually lose a little low end. I'd say under drive pulley intake and Vtcs delete.

You don't need to swap the block the mazdaspeed used the same motor. Stock motor will be fine as long as you keep it under 10psi

Ok, thank you. Now I have a huge question. Has anyone here had to bend back the a-pillar and b-pillar. Cause I just rolled Mea and the passenger a and b pillars are off by about a 3/4" and the driver side a pillar is off by about 1/2".

usually, once the pillars get bent, the car is done. you could "possibly" get them bent back into shape, but it will never be right.

Its not that far off. Luckily I might be able to use the part car as a template of sorts. If I'm lucky I can somehow take the roof from the bottom of the pillars and weld them where I cut them. Think I could? Like cut just at the very bottom of the pillars, and take the whole assembly and weld it onto mine?
