As by the nick, I'm a welder/fitter and the shop I'm at has some unique tools to get various jobs done. I drew up a shift knob for my new 5 and it should be ready sometime late next week. I'm getting it made out of a solid piece of stainless. It is about 9cm x 3cm and will taper at the bottom down to 2cm on the length at the 6cm point . Hard to describe but it will resemble an engine piston, the flat top will have the Mazda "5" engraved on the top. Photos will come when complete and installed 8)

Here it is, machined from a solid piece of aluminum. Still have to get the "5" engraved on the top. Basically it's just to see how it looks and if the thread size is correct. BTW thread size is 8mm x 1.25
Not sure how to embed a skydrive image so the link: http://sdrv.ms/Ye8cvL

Looking good, I think the engraved "5" will add a lot to it.
I'd just be weary of a solid aluminum knob, from experience, it will get uncomfortably hot to the touch after sitting in the sun in summer. Maybe you can consider rubber or leather wrap in the straight section, just a suggestion.

I could spin it off and put it under the seat on really hot days ...another theft deterant system ;)

Very cool metalfab! Curious to see how much you'd be able to produce/sell these for. I'd be interested.

Still waiting to get the "5" engraved on the top. The CNC machines at work are really busy and I can't sneak it in just yet.

I love that you were able to get just the shifter you wanted and for basically nothing since you made it up at your work. I'm very interested to see it with the "5" engraved on the top. I recently upgraded the shift knob on my 2012 Sport AT and it did cost me about $80 to get a great-looking, high-quality shift knob. I ended up with a Momo Combat Evo in silver. The only other thing I had to do to make this fit properly on the smaller diameter of the automatic transmission shift lever was to get longer set screws from the hardware store for about 50 cents each. I purchased my Momo shift knob from www.gomiata.com which has, by far, the cheapest price for this knob. Interestingly enough, gomiata.com sells a screw-on shift knob adapter for manual transmission mazdas that have a 10mm diameter shift lever. They don't offer one for the automatic transmissions with the 8mm diameter shift lever.

Cost me nothing, had it made at work :) Looking online and at one store locally (Auto World in Metrotown) similar shifters are going for $80+.

Oh crap, forgot I had a billet AT shift knob made for me. I'm thinking of making another being a bit skinnier, it's too fat for my wife lol.
