Considering purchasing P5 (price, options)

I've been looking through this forum and am glad to see the large number of satisfied P5 owners here! It's encouraged me to seriously consider it as my next car and so I went to the mazdausa web site to "build" my own.

The two options I definitely want are ABS/Airbags for safety reasons and the moonroof for, well, let's just say tanning reasons. I'm in California after all and should take advantage of the sun all year round!

I called a dealer and got an offer from a Mazda Protege 5 at Invoice + cost of options + $200

This somes to:
15,550 Invoice
490 ABS/Side aribags
690 Moonroof/6CD
(500) College Rebate
(1,750) Protege5 Rebate
200 Dealer profit
----------
14,680

Of course there's still $520 for destination charge, and 8.25% tax for california.

With those added on, out the door it would be $16,454.

Questions:
1) What deals have you guys been getting? Is this about the best I can do?
2) I live in the Bay Area (South Bay). Which dealers have the best service? I suspect with the weak economy I can get any dealer to price match so price being equal, I'd like to buy from the place with the best service department.

I haven't completely decided on the the Protege5 - I'm also considering the MazdaSpeed Protege for the fun factor but I still have to check how the insurance number look on it. As it stands, even with the Protege5 I'll probably be paying $1800/yr for full coverage because of my short driving history and am under 25.

hello sheppard and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. (stash)

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!! (stash)

that sounds like a decent deal to me....and as for where you buy it.....buy the car where you can get the best deal......you can get it serviced at any dealer....for just because a specific dealer has a better service department...doesn't mean they have the best sales department.....

1) Sounds like a great deal out the door. I bought mine in Oct of 2001 (before the 0%, before the Prot rebate, etc) and paid 17,000 out the door taxes and all. And I didnt get all the options you did. From a dealer point of view, I would demand the 200 "dealer profit" be taken off. Invoice is not invoice, it's well above. It's just an established low-ball figure, the actual production costs for cars have plummeted over the last 10 years as manufacturers outsource smaller parts to low-wage nations. But that wouldnt be a sticking point for me, sounds like a good deal.
2)Nuke answered, you can get your car serviced at any dealership in the nation.

Thanks for the response guys. I probably should've gone to the dealership today since it's the last day of the month. Oh well, I'm not in a rush.

Does anyone know if Mazda plans to continue the rebates, or perhaps make then even more attractive? I heard that there used to be a 0.0% APR for 60 months on the P5 - I hope it makes a comeback!

wow, if the dealer gives you 0% APR after they give the cash rebate also ... take it!! I don't think most of the dealership will give you this kind of deal, i know i didn't. I bought mine new 2003 3 weeks ago and the salesperson told me either i took the cash rebate or 0% APR, but not both.
